COMMISSIONERS CITY OF MARLBOROUGH Mike Cabral RECREATION DEPARTMENT William Doherty 239 Concord Road Robert Kays: Chairman Marlborough, Massachusetts 01752 Melynda Gallagher Tel (508) 624-6925 TTY (508) 460-3610 Shanissa Sampson Mark Vital John Welch DIRECTOR Charles Thebado PROGRAM MANAGER Joseph Mulvey January 11, 2023 Pursuant to the notice duly filed with the City Clerk, a meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission was held at 5:30pm at the Recreation Office. Present were Commission Members: Chairman Kays, Commissioner Vital, Commissioner Gallagher, Commissioner Doherty and Commissioner Cabral. Also attending Recreation Director Charles Thebado and Program Manager Joseph Mulvey. Approval of minutes 11-09-22 On a motion duly made by Commissioner Vital and seconded by Commissioner Gallagher, it was unanimously: Voted: To accept the 11-09-22. Parks Report: Mr. White was not able to attend the Commission meeting. Recreation Report - Charles Thebado, Director: Mr. Thebado gave the following Recreation Department report: • Home for the Holidays went very well. We served over 400 cups of hot chocolate and approximately 800 bags of popcorn. Thanks for the assistance from Chairman Kays as he helped coordinate the hot chocolate and came down to help serve popcorn. Also, thanks to Commissioner Mark Vital for providing the volunteers with the Leaders of Tomorrow group at AMSA. It was a great family night! • We had our 1st Lifeguard course of the year over the holiday break. We had two people complete the course along with an additional hire who completed the Boys Scouts Lifeguard course. We will be holding an additional lifeguard training course during the February school break as well. We have posted the information on our Facebook page and the city communications team shared it on their city department social media pages. • All our Winter programs are posted online on the Recreation Department Recdesk page. They include Marial Arts, Dance, Ice skating, Ski and Snowboard program at Mt. Wachusett with MHS, and E-sports to name a few. We also have started our Free Snowshoe Rentals once again for Marlborough residents. Page 2 • The Dek Hockey Rink here at Ghiloni is coming along. I’m anticipating it should be completed sometime in the spring. • Don Morris has issued the scope of work for the wading pools to replace deck surfaces, pool flooring, additional drains, and tiling of pool walls. Once completed, the DPW will put the projects out to bid. Farrell Pool is now undergoing cosmetic changes as the tree by the entrance has been removed along with the fencing. The pre-existing light pole bases have been removed, the concrete tables have been taken out, and the asphalt has been removed as well. • Gathering information on bands for this year’s summer concerts and should have schedule completed with Simela by the end of February. • Meeting with Chris White next week to go over what needs to be discussed with youth groups before spring season. Also, will be meeting with MYBA to discuss their plans to renovate their existing concession stand with Dan Jackson of the Facilities Department and Tin Htway from the Building Department. • Commissioner Vital asked if youth groups need to have the Commission’s approval before any work is done by them at any of the fields. Mr. Thebado stated yes, they must have the Commission’s approval before any work is done. • Placed a handicap port-o-let at Ward Park as residents are using the track for outdoor activities. • There was a brief discussion regarding the Farmers Market moving to Union Common. • Commissioner Vital stated the Rotary Club along with other Marlborough organizations are planning a Family Fun Festival on Sunday, May 7th and would like to request Ward Park for their event. They will send their official request as soon as they confirm their date. The Commission thanked Mr. Thebado for his report. On a motion made by Commissioner Cabral and seconded by Commissioner Gallagher, it was unanimously: All in favor. Motion carried.
