January 24, 2024 Council Meeting A joint meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia and the Martinsville City Public School Board was held on January 24, 2024, at the Martinsville Middle School, at 6:00 PM. Council Members present included Mayor LC Jones, Kathy Lawson, Lawrence Mitchell, Vice Mayor Aaron Rawls, and Tammy Pearson. City Staff included City Manager Aretha Ferrell- Benavides. School Staff present included School Board Members Yvonne Givens, Michael Williamson, Nekia Blackwell, and Cody Williams. School Staff present included: Superintendent Dr. Zeb Talley, Travis Clemons, Jay Eanes, Dr. Cynthia Tarpley, and Dr. Angilee Downing. Mayor LC Jones calls the City Council to order and Yvonne Givens calls the school board to order at 6:06pm. The invocation was provided by Dr. Zeb Talley. Pledge of Allegiance was led by Council Member Kathy Lawson General Discussion was held regarding School fiscal challenges, the future and current capital needs, and the Legislative Agenda.
