Public in Attendance: Billy Croan III. APPROVAL OF APRIL 12, 2023 MINUTES 1. a. April 12, 2023 Minutes Councilmember Laha made a motion to approve the April 12, 2023 minutes. Linden Square Tour - Justin Merkey The committee met Justin Merkey, Director of Gladstone, MO Parks and Recreation in downtown Gladstone to hear about the development of Linden Square, Gladstone's premier entertainment district. The committee heard about the development and growth of the area that was anchored by the building of the community center in the early 2000s. The area no includes multi-family housing, restaurants and Linden Square. The area is home to to many concerts and special events throughout the summer season which begins in June and ends in mid-October. 2. NKC Iron District Tour The tour then continued to North Kansas City. While in transport staff shared the growth and development that has occurred in the area after the completion of the 2016 Master Plan. Projects included downtown streetscape, complete streets project, feasibility study for River Forest Park, an undeveloped park. In addition, since 2019 there have been the addition of multiple multi-family home apartment complexes with upwards of 1,050 units upon completion in 2024 totaling over $210 million. The first destination in North Kansas City was the Iron District. This was a concept created by Rachel Kennedy after eating a cuban sandwich with her husband and agreeing they could do better. They created the area out of shipping containers to provide support to local start ups to eat, drink, shop and be connected. It opened the fall of 2019 with the grand opening slated for Snake Saturday in 2020. Due to COVID, the grand opening did not occur until protocols were understood. It is a unique business concept that cycles vendors out year-to-year. The idea is that the space provided to vendors helps them test a concept without having to have major investments. The site has space for 7 food/drink options, 4 shops and supports pop-up vendors throughout the year. There is an outdoor courtyard for live music Friday and Saturdays May through October along with games and WiFi. • Committee members shared there are similar developments in other cities. A link to the these locations will be shared with committee members to see how size and scale varies from location to location. 3. NKC Chicken-n-Pickle Tour With the growth of pickleball, the last tour location was chosen to showcase how a privately owned company has expanded upon the love of a game. The original location was opened in NKC in 2017 after the owner Dave Johnson was on a trip to Pheonix in December 2015. The location features indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, outdoor games and lounge space, a restaurant as well as rental space for private parties. The company now operates 7 locations throughout the United States with two new locations slated to open in 2023 and 6 slated for 2024. The committee browsed the area and took in the amenities of the location before boarding the bus and heading back to Merriam. 4. Miscellaneous Update Staff reiterated upcoming meeting dates as June 28 and August 23. Tour locations are still being finalized for those meeting.
