CALL TO ORDER Chair Public Art Committee - Nov 14 2024 called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM II. ACTION ITEMS 1. Consider approval of the Sept. 12, 2024 Public Art Committee meeting minutes. Committee Member Becker made a motion to approve the Sept. 12 Public Art Committee minutes Committee Member Nelson seconded and the motion was unanimously APPROVED. IV. PROJECT UPDATES 1. Hearts Across Merriam The Hearts Across Merriam program will hire local glass blower Dierk Van Keppel to create 75 hearts for Merriam's 75th birthday. The hearts will be hidden in public places Page 1 of 3 Public Art Committee Minutes – November 14, 2024 around Merriam for people to discover and enjoy as a special keepsake. The hearts will have a logo imprint on them to make them identifiable to the person who finds them. The hearts will be hefty enough to minimize any concerns about breakage. Some hearts may be placed in cellophane gift bags or have a way to be hung. Hearts will be distributed at PAC meetings for committee members to help hide throughout the year. Committee Member Gomez made a motion to fund the Hearts Across Merriam program and have PAC members assist with the hiding of the hearts. Committee Member Nelson seconded and the motion was APPROVED 7-1. Committee Member Denesha voted nay. 2. Public Art Tour on the Otocast app Merriam's Public Art Tour on the Otocast app is now live. There are still a few final edits being made before we being promoting it publicly. PAC members are encouraged to download and explore the tour and provide feedback. The PAC would like to learn more about the stats gathered by the app after a year to help gauge the value of art to the community. 3. Public Art RFQ - Jury Process The only staff feedback about the public art project on the MCC parking structure is that whatever is done must be code compliant, and paint would be the easiest option as there would not be any codes to consider. For example, codes will apply to artwork that requires any drilling in to the walls or ceiling. The PAC note that this shouldn't be a deterrent to artists, especially if they are experienced. Artists are expected to include any necessary engineering in their budget. The Call for Artists went live on CaFE on Nov. 1 and remains open until Jan. 2. Artists must have an account on CaFE to apply. The committee is encouraged to promote this opportunity with their networks, and they request the City promote the opportunity on our social networks. The CaFE platform allows PAC members to complete their jury work online when it is convenient for them. The committee would like to complete one round of Yes / No / Maybe before the January meeting. Several members will be absent at the regularly scheduled January 9 meeting, so the committee agreed to have a meeting on January 16. They will then complete another round using a scale of 1-7 before the February meeting. The top ten scoring artists will be discussed at the February meeting. The rubric will be customized for this project and will be used at the meeting. Three semi-finalist artists will be invited to create site specific proposals. The PAC encourages semi-finalists to visit the site in person. 4. City Updates The Public Art Committee will not have a meeting in December. A new mural is now on Merriam Drive on the side of Hurricane Allie's Bar and Grill. The committee would like to learn more about any regulations the City has for objectionable content in a mural. Reuben Cozmyer was selected to represent Ward 4 on City Council. Seats are open on the Planning Commission. Page 2 of 3 Public Art Committee Minutes – November 14, 2024 5. Other Items from the Floor Christopher Lietch has resigned from the Public Art Committee due to other volunteer commitments. The committee will fill the seat after the first project is complete. The committee will also consider their next project once they have experienced the process for this first project. V.
