MIDDLETOWN COMMISSION ON THE ARTS Committee: Music Sub Committee Date: 9/10/2018 Location: Room B-19 City Hall Music Committee of the MCA 1. Called to order by Subcommittee Chair Barbara Arafeh on September 10, 2018 at 7:02 P.M. Attending: Barbara Arafeh, Domenique Thornton, Trevor Davis, Seb Giuliano, David Bauer, Ann-Marie Cannata McEwen and Neely Bruce 2. No public session 3. Old business a. No further discussion of musical venues b. Discussion proposed by the Chair to highlight the musical history of musicians of Middletown and musical groups associated with Middletown at the Middlesex County Historical Society. Executive Director Deborah Shapiro has agreed to meet with Barbara Arafeh to review a submission of historical connections to be displayed in an exhibit at the Historical Society. The Subcommittee discussed materials we propose to submit to fill a room at the Historical Society for display. The Chair is working very hard to gather sufficient material to propose to the Historian Society. Various additional resources were discussed by the subcommittee such as the Middletown Room at the Russell Library, Wesleyan Olin Library Archives, the Musicians Union, the Hartford Jazz Society, Reginald DeKoven, Allie Wrubel, Henry Clay Works. All agreed that Middletown was a town with a built in “Hit Parade.” 4. New Business a. Discussion of a Music Group Registry. Members questioned who would maintain such a registry as well as the musical venues of Middletown. b. Neely Bruce announced that there will be a one day John Barlow Festival at Wesleyan on February 9, 2019. c. Members noted with approval the Middletown Arts Commission Facebook Page. d. Members look forward to the new Director for the Commission on the Arts. Adjournment 8:02 PM
