Public Safety Commission FIRE DEPARTMENT March 18, 2024 **Hybrid City Hall - Room 208 -----------Meeting Minutes---------- 1. CALL TO ORDER Commissioner Ford called the meeting to order at 7:26 p.m. 2. ATTENDANCE MEMBERS PRESENT: Commissioner Darnell Ford Commissioner Tony Gennaro Commissioner Linda Salafia Commissioner Kelly Sweeney MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioner Anthony Mangiafico STAFF PRESENT: Deputy Fire Chief Dave Albert Police Chief Erik Costa 3. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING Commissioner Ford entertained a motion to approve the minutes from February 26, 2024, Commissioner Salafia so moved, Commissioner Sweeney seconded, and all voted in favor to accept the meeting minutes as presented. 4. PUBLIC HEARING 5. CORRESPONDENCE  Thank you letter received from Liberty Bank o CPR and AED training done for employees 6. MONTHLY REPORT  Deputy Chief Albert gave the monthly report: o 292 emergency calls for the month o Fire Activity:  Peppermill Village fire in Westfield – no injuries or fatalities  High angle rescue call in Portland  Fox 61’s Jim Altman did a news story on this rescue Page 1 of 3  Main Street - Cromwell structure fire  Fire on Boston Road earlier today o Events:  Attended OSHA Zoom meetings  OSHA in process of rewriting standards that have not been touched in about twenty years – these changes will affect the fire service o Middletown Fire already ahead of the game – some boots were expired but have already been replaced o Further updates to follow  Several meetings held with our records management system RedNMX – in 100% production phase  Attended drone training  Labor Management meeting held  Mock OSHA inspection done  Swearing In Ceremony held for Battalion Chief, Lieutenant, Assistant Fire Marshal, and three new firefighters  Sub-Safety Committee meeting held with Risk, Health, & Emergency Management  Topic of adding AEDs to city buildings – CPR training to be done in addition to AEDs added o Training:  Assistant Chief Ehman did bloodborne pathogen training  Truck 2 training completed  Purchased new flammable gas detectors for all apparatus  Nick Esposito from the Bridgeport Fire Department coming in this week to teach a truck tactics class to all shifts  Preparing for live burns to be done the first week of April in conjunction with South Fire District 7. OLD BUSINESS o Overtime  Fill-in overtime starting to pick up slightly with vacations picking up  One long term comp. coming back in April  One long term light duty will turn into a FMLA as pregnancy turns into childbirth  One out on short term FMLA  Two recruits currently in the Fire Academy  Truck 1 now back – was out for a full month after a $28,000 repair  Discussion needs to be had about replacing this apparatus  Chief Woron spoke with State Rep. Chaffey regarding getting a training building here in Middletown  Rep. Chaffey is looking into funding/grant for this o City wide EMS:  811 calls with zero mutual ambulances 8. NEW BUSINESS o Mock OSHA inspection: o Deputy Chief Albert explained that the department wanted to be pro-active and invited OSHA into the building before they do a spot inspection Public Safety Meeting – March 18, 2024 minutes Page 2 of 3  Went through every floor of the firehouse & spotted what needed to be addressed, a list was made, and the issues will be addressed o Chief Woron sent the five year LoCIP plans to City Hall  Plans included roof repairs at Cross Street, AC units at Cross Street, floor replacement at HQ  ARPA funds were received for building renovations at HQ so a committee will be put together soon to start the renovation process o Further talks to be had with the Mayor with regards to a third fire station on Newfield Street 9.
