Public Safety Commission FIRE DEPARTMENT February 26, 2024 **Hybrid City Hall - Room 208 -----------Meeting Minutes---------- 1. CALL TO ORDER Commissioner Ford called the meeting to order at 6:31 p.m. 2. ATTENDANCE MEMBERS PRESENT: Commissioner Darnell Ford Commissioner Tony Gennaro Commissioner Anthony Mangiafico Commissioner Linda Salafia Commissioner Kelly Sweeney MEMBERS ABSENT: STAFF PRESENT: Fire Chief Jay Woron Police Chief Erik Costa 3. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING Commissioner Ford entertained a motion to approve the minutes from January 22, 2023, Commissioner Salafia so moved, Commissioner Mangiafico seconded, and all voted in favor to accept the meeting minutes as presented. 4. PUBLIC HEARING 5. CORRESPONDENCE  None 6. MONTHLY REPORT  Chief Woron gave the monthly report: o 336 emergency calls for the month o Fire Activity:  Major structure fire on Scarborough Lane in Westfield – responded mutual aid  Chimney fire on Long Lane Page 1 of 3 o Events:  Attended Firing Range Committee meeting  CBB meeting  Monthly Opioid Task Force meeting through Middlesex Hospital  Opioid Working Group meeting attended  Career Chiefs monthly meeting held  Attended retirement event for Deputy Chief Dunn/Portland Fire Department  Negotiations meeting held  Met with Cardiac & Cancer screening company rep.  Met with PMA representative regarding OSHA inspection o Training:  Monthly EMS training was done  Entire department was fit tested for SCBA face pieces – done annually  Monthly car seat clinic held along with multiple walk in car seat installs done  New Truck 2 training being done by Assistant Chief Ehman – driver training, pumping, & aerial operations  Complete CPR refresher done for the entire department  Fire Marshal’s office had the state Fire Marshals come in and do a class on evidence collection/preservation to each shift  Aerial support team did some drone training 7. OLD BUSINESS o Overtime  Much lower last couple of months  Current long term injury should be coming back soon  Current long term maternity still has a long way to go  Two current vacancies in which two recruits are currently attending the Fire Academy  One childbirth FMLA going out soon o City wide EMS:  859 with three mutual aid ambulances o Building Projects:  Cracks in the apparatus floor at headquarters – awaiting repair  Energy audit done at Cross Street firehouse – awaiting results o Retirements:  One Battalion Chief & one firefighter  Both positions filled – recruits currently in fire academy & will graduate in May o Swearing In Ceremony:  March 12th at 4:00 p.m. in Council Chambers – all are invited  To be sworn in during this ceremony is a Battalion Chief, Fire Lieutenant, Assistant Fire Marshal, and three firefighters – all are working in their positions 8. NEW BUSINESS o OSHA is redoing the fire brigade standard that dates back to 1972 – now rolling out latest installment o Multiple Zoom meetings have been held to review what is coming – will be a long implementation process o Mock OSHA inspection done today at fire headquarters – small list given for minor things to do Public Safety Meeting – February 26, 2024 minutes Page 2 of 3  Cross Street firehouse to be done next week o Will invite OSHA in after these inspections are done for a compliance check o Budget o Due this Friday o Appointment set for mid-March with the Mayor to discuss the budget  Chief Woron reported that he expects a reduction in the fire tax o New Quint fire apparatus o Shooting for Monday to go into service o Existing tower ladder truck out of service o Had to be towed today – turbo needs replacement 9.
