DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING THE RECONSTRUCTION OF
COMMERCE AND SOUTH STREETS.
Bart Nies and Mark Digman with Delta 3 Engineering provided a re-cap of what was discussed at the January
meeting. Digman presented three design options for the committee to discuss.
Option 1: There would be a sidewalk on the east side of Commerce only to maximize the road width and to try to
gain more parking stalls. This option would provide 4’ sidewalks and make the street 34’ from back of curb to back
of curb. The street would widen to 38’ from Front Street to Old Darlington Road and this section has 30 proposed
parking stalls instead of 28. There are currently 65 standard parking stalls on Commerce Street/South Street from
Fountain Street to Old Darlington Road. With option one, six standard parking stalls would be added for a total of 71
stalls. On South Street, there are 18-20 parking stalls and green space proposed.
Option 2: The road would be narrower than in option one. Parking would be lost on the west side of Commerce
Street in order to get 4’ sidewalks on both sides of the street. Proposed crosswalks are added at South Street and
Front Street. With option two, there would be 56 standard parking stalls, losing 9 stalls from the way it is currently
on Commerce Street.
Option 3: This option closely represents the current situation on Commerce Street. The road would be 38’ wide from
back of curb to back of curb on Commerce Street from Fountain Street to Old Darlington Road. There would be no
sidewalk between Fountain Street and Front Street, and no “real” sidewalk on the west side of the street. South of
Front Street would become narrower.
The committee discussed all three options and decided on a hybrid model of option one, to include the proposed
sidewalk from Fountain to Front Street as shown in option two.
Motion (Cisler/Spady) to recommend Council approval of a hybrid between option one as presented, to
include the proposed sidewalk on the west side of the street from Fountain Street to Front Street, as shown in
option two. Motion carried by roll call, all voting aye (4-0).
DISCUSSION OF MEETING CALENDAR AND TIMELINE
Next meeting in July.
ADJOURNMENT
Motion (Spady/Cisler) to adjourn at 10:44 a.m. Motion carried, all voting aye (4-0).
