City Council Work Session May 24, 2021 Minutes Members Present: Evans, Olson, Jantzer, Pitner, Podrygula, Ross, Sipma Members Absent: None The work session began at 5:30 pm at the Council Chambers in City Hall. Economic Development Presentation & Discussion City Manager, Harold Stewart, gave a presentation on the role of economic development for the Minot community. He described how they can improve the economic well-being and quality of life in the community by means of targeted goals and objectives. He highlighted ways to retain and expand existing businesses, attract new businesses, enrich entrepreneurship programs, boost tourism, and develop the workforce. He expanded on key partnerships to foster economic development through a combination of efforts. They need to involve and respect stakeholders while also identifying respective roles. He then explained ways to improve the economic climate by delivering services promptly, resolving issues, and being responsive. Mr. Stewart described the tools necessary for economic development as well as the conditions needed to provide an attractive business environment. He outlined the next steps which include a strategic planning process to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The City, along with community stakeholders will work to obtain good data, identify retail leakage, analyze employment, get everyone on the same page, and identify natural advantages. These concepts will be used to create a plan and set priorities for the future. Following the presentation, the City Manager and Finance Director responded to questions from the Council.
