On a motion by Vice Chair Carter, seconded by Committee Member Hunter and carried
by the following vote, the Architectural Review Committee approved the consent agenda,
with an amendment to the minutes of November 20, 2019.

Addition and 2nd Story Deck at 156 Via Gayuba.
Staff Presentation/Committee Member Questions.
Senior Associate Planner Schmidt presented the Agenda Report and took Committee
Members’ questions.
Applicant
Ryan Cornelson, of Wald, Ruhnke & Dost Architects explained that no further plans existed for
expansion, aside from the addition currently before ARC.

Committee Member Comments
Committee Member Tregenza said that while the home and neighborhood were lovely, he
would like to see more fenestration to lend to the character of the addition. He said that the
design was not as imaginative as he felt it should be, despite the applicant having met all
design guidelines.
Committee Member Bluth noted that the design was advantageous in maintaining neighbors’
views, despite lack of aesthetics.
Committee Member Tregenza added that while the neighbor had the right to an addition, he
wanted to noted that he was not in favor of a stacked saltbox-type of design.
Chair Rath agreed with Committee Members Bluth and Tregenza, adding that she felt the
applicant had done the best he could with the limited space.
On a motion by Committee Member Bluth, seconded by Vice Chair Carter and carried by
the following vote, the Architectural Review Committee approved Architectural Review
Application ARP-19-0372 to allow 2nd Story Addition and 2nd Story Deck at 156 Via
Gayuba.

Update received.
Principal Planner Flower discussed upcoming projects.
Committee Member Bluth mentioned that he was not sure how to address view impact concerns
and asked for input on how to assess those dilemmas as they arose. Principal Planner Flower
noted that view impacts would be discussed in depth and an upcoming project at 260 Laine
Street.

5. Planning Office Update
ADJOURNMENT
ADJOURNMENT — The general policy of the Architectural Review Committee is that the Afternoon
Session will end no later than 5:30 p.m. and the Evening Session will end no later than 11:00 p.m. Any
public agenda items that have not been completed within the designated adjournment time may be
formally extended by the Committee, or continued to the next regularly scheduled Architectural Review
Committee Meeting, or continued to a Special Meeting.
Agenda packets may be reviewed by the public in the Monterey Public Library, in the Planning Office,
or on the web at http://www.monterey.org beginning late Friday afternoon prior to the date of the
meeting.
Members of the public have the right to address the Committee on any Agenda items. The Chair will
formally open the floor for public comment. However, if you wish to speak to items during "Consent
Agenda" or "Staff Informational Report," please advise the staff or the Chair prior to the action on that
item and you will be recognized. Notification as much in advance as possible is appreciated.
Information distributed to the Committee at the meeting becomes part of the public record. A copy of
written material, pictures, etc. should be provided to the Secretary for this purpose.
Architectural Review Committee decisions may be appealed within ten (10) days from the date of the
decision on forms available in the Planning Division during business hours. When the tenth day falls
on a weekend or a holiday, the appeal deadline date is the next working day following the holiday or
