City Council Minutes Wednesday, May 30, 2018
***Adjourn to Closed Session***
Mayor Roberson opened the floor for public comments on the closed session agenda. David
Crabbe, Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust, said he remembers a high percentage of commercial
fishing vessels in Monterey back when he started fishing. He asked the City Council to
encourage local fishing and the buying of local fish.
Dean Owens, Lusamerica Foods, said that his company is interested in leasing space at Wharf
II. He said they have local credentials, wide distribution on the West Coast, and want to bring
the fishing distribution business back into Monterey.
Alan Lovewell, Real Good Fish, shared his company’s mission and said they are very
enthusiastic about the opportunity of leasing the space at Wharf II. He thanked City Council for
their support to the Fisheries Trust and said there is no reason local people should be eating
imported seafood.
Barbara Meister, Monterey Bay Aquarium, said that there is a great success story around
conservation, and now there is the opportunity and obligation to resolve the people and profit
part of the sustainability challenge.
Alan An, Anago USA, said that the hagfish eel presents an emerging industry with no seasons
and no quotas. He expressed interest in a Wharf II leasing opportunity. With no further
requests to speak, Mayor Roberson closed public comments.
