MINUTES COLTON HALL MUSEUM AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Monday, May 23, 2011 4:00 PM COUNCIL CHAMBER, FEW MEMORIAL HALL OF RECORDS MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Commissioners Present: Rodriguez, Greenwald, Dias, Han, Schneider, Wojtkowski Commissioners Absent: Messenger Ex-Officio and Staff Community Services and Library Director Bui-Burton, Museums, Members Present: Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland, Administrative Assistant Rygg CALL TO ORDER 4:01 PM ROLL CALL CONSENT ITEMS Approval of Minutes 1. April 25, 2011 Motion made by Dias to approve the minutes. Second by Wojtkowski. Motion approved. ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS 2. Museum and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report April 1-30, 2011 Commissioner Rodriguez asked about the Johnk exhibit and Copeland provided explanation. The Doud Fund pre-application presentation for funding for a historic structures report for Colton Hall is is scheduled for June. PUBLIC APPEARANCE Old Business 3. Receive Report on Fiscal Year 2011/2012 Budget Process Bui-Burton reported that employee groups made concessions that will result in fewer city employee lay-offs. The budget gap is now at $3M. 4. Receive Status Report on Presidio of Monterey Museum Traffic Signs Copeland reported that he is investigating the placement of a sign below the Private Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission Minutes Monday, May 23, 2011 Bolio Gate (near Boy Scout Lodge) to direct visitors to Corporal Ewing Road to the Presidio of Monterey Museum. A follow-up report will be presented in August. 5. Receive Report from Ad-Hoc Strategic Planning Subcommittee Commissioner Rodriguez will email commission members on date, time and location of meeting. The meeting is tentatively set from 2 pm - 5 pm at the Larkin Boardroom. The Commissioners will need to discuss the basic strategic process, take a goal and work on objectives, outcomes and present to the Strategic Planning Sub-Committee. 6. Receive Report from Ad-Hoc Fundraising Subcommittee Suggestions were made to update the exhibits at Colton Hall to make them more interesting for fourth-grade children. Funds could be raised through local foundations to help finance exhibits. 7. Receive Report on "Art in the Adobes" Commissioner Wojtkowski provided comment about a fundraiser on August 4. Copeland mentioned an exhibit of WPA paintings at Alvarado Gallery which may include Evelyn McCormick paintings and photographs by Sybyl Anikeiev. Commissioner Rodriguez asked for the commissioners to help with the AIA event, not only as docents for the artwork but also to be knowledgeable about the historic buildings themselves. A question was raised if there would be a brochure; there may be a multi-folded brochure with a map with the locations and facts of the paintings. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Han - Geraldine Low-Sabado raised concerns about the maintenance of the Chinese section at the Encinal cemetery. Copeland referred her to the Cemetery Coordinator to discuss maintenance of the crematorium. Wojtkowski - On June 4th, there will be a celebration of the City's birthday and the grand re-opening and open house from 3 - 8 pm of the Museum of Monterey, formerly known as the Monterey Maritime and History Museum. The Museum will have different facets of art, Monterey and maritime history and innovation. Greenwald - presented a newspaper clipping from the Monterey Herald in 1968 introducing the Colton Hall Museum Hostesses in which his mother was a member. Dias - there is a lot of good stuff going on. Rodriguez - received an email from the National Honor Society coordinator for Monterey High School, Dianne Begbie expressing her appreciation for Colton Hall and complimenting city staff for their help with the May 17th event. A member of the public or a Commissioner may request that an item recommended for approval on consent be heard on the regular agenda for further discussion. Approval of Minutes 1. The appropriate staff person will contact the sender concerning the details.
