Thursday, May 19, 2011 Action: Approved with Commissioner Canepa’s corrections on Page 6 under Commissioner Comments, in the last sentence of his comments (changes are crossed- out and underlined) “He said the whole majority of the discussion was about bicycles and that the Mayor informed him that this item would be coming to the Commission in the near future.” (5-0-2, Cooney, Woodward absent). ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS None. PUBLIC APPEARANCE 2. Recommend Approval of Proposed Cardiac Screening and Evaluation Services with PRIMA HEART at the Monterey Sports Center Action: The Parks and Recreation Commission recommended approval to the City Council of the proposed Space Lease Agreement with PRIMA HEART to provide Cardiac Screening and Evaluation Services at the Monterey Sports Center (4-0-2-1, Cooney, Woodward absent; McCarthy abstained). Sports Center Manager Vierra and Fitness Manager Rothschild presented the staff report stating this new service would augment the wellness services already offered at the Sports Center and will help retain long-term participants. Fitness Manager Rothschild further explained that PRIMA HEART is a local provider of cardiovascular screening and evaluation services in Monterey and they were selected to provide this service at the Monterey Sports Center based on their proposal through the RFP process, which was done in December 2010. He stated that contracting with PRIMA HEART will allow the City of Monterey to maintain these services in  Parks and Recreation Commission Minutes Thursday, June 16, 2011 Monterey as the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) moves its cardiac wellness services to their new facility in Marina. He noted that by maintaining these services in Monterey, we will be able to encourage residents to stay local and continue to support the downtown Monterey businesses, and increase membership at the Sports Center. Commissioner Federico asked what the cost would be for a client. Fitness Manager Rothschild said it would depend on what services they needed, but that it would be about one-fourth the cost of CHOMP’s services. Commissioner Marotta asked how many square feet PRIMA HEART would be leasing. Fitness Manager Rothschild said the lease is for 250 square feet and the rent will be $500 per month on a two-year contract with an option to renew for an additional three (3) years. Commissioner Marotta asked if the cost per square foot competes with the private sector. Sports Center Manager Vierra stated they contacted a local realtor and that is the current comparable cost per square foot in the area. Sharon Dwight, Monterey resident, asked what the impact would be on people currently using the proposed space to be leased to PRIMA HEART. Sports Center Manager Vierra said an office became vacant due to the loss of an employee during previous budget cuts and that the proposed area is currently only used by staff working with clients. On a motion by Commissioner Menendez-Herbst, seconded by Commissioner Canepa and carried by the following vote, the Parks and Recreation Commission recommended approval to the City Council of the proposed Space License Agreement with PRIMA HEART to provide Cardiac Screening and Evaluation Services at the Monterey Sports Center: AYES: 4 COMMISSIONERS: Canepa, Federico, Marotta, Menendez-Herbst NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 2 COMMISSIONERS: Cooney, Woodward ABSTAIN: 1 COMMISSIONERS: McCarthy The Parks and Recreation Commission will now convene behind the Council Chambers to board the bus to go on their Park Tour of Facilities.
