MINUTES COLTON HALL MUSEUM AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Monday, July 25, 2011 4:00 PM COUNCIL CHAMBERS, FEW MEMORIAL HALL OF RECORDS MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Commissioners Present: Rodriguez, Greenwald, Dias, Schneider Commissioners Absent: Han, Messenger, Wojtkowski Ex-Officio and Staff Community Services Director Bui-Burton, Museums, Cultural Members Present: Arts and Archives Manager Copeland, Administrative Assistant Rygg CALL TO ORDER 4:05 PM ROLL CALL CONSENT ITEMS Approval of Minutes 1. June 27, 2011 Motion by Dias to accept the minutes. Second by Greenwald and motion carried. ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS 2. Museum and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report June 1- 30, 2011 Rodriguez asked if help was need for History Fest, and Copeland will work with Rodriguez with more details for venues and events. About 40 pieces of art from the City's Art Collection have been selected for Art in the Adobes. The City Council Chambers (Few Memorial Hall) will serve as a lecture hall and art venue during the event. The City Council also approved funding for art conservation for some of the artwork. PUBLIC APPEARANCE New Business 3. Approve Expenditure of Museum Trust Funds for Jim Conway Memorial Bench Motion by Greenwald to approve expenditure of Museum Trust Funds for the memorial bench. Second by Dias and motion carried. Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission Minutes Monday, July 25, 2011 4. Receive Report on Visitor Surveys on How Visitors Receive Information about Colton Hall Museum and Presidio of Monterey Museum A question was raised since Cannery Row receives a great deal of tourist traffic, how can visitors be redirected to downtown Monterey. 5. Approval of Staff Recommendation for Baumer String Quartet Use of Colton Hall in June 2012 Motion by Greenwald to approve staff recommendation for Baumer String Quartet use of Colton Hall in June 2012. Second by Schneider and motion carried. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Rodriguez - No Commission meeting in August since there will be a Strategic Planning Retreat on August 11 at 2 pm. Topics for Mayor's meeting: thanks for the new Presidio Museum directional signs; Art in the Adobes; the memorial bench for Jim Conway; Alvarado Gallery continues to showcase art exhibits. NEXT MEETING - August 22, 2011 There will be no August 22 meeting. A member of the public or a Commissioner may request that an item recommended for approval on consent be heard on the regular agenda for further discussion. Approval of Minutes 1. June 27, 2011 ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS PUBLIC COMMENTS allows you, the public, to speak for a maximum of three minutes on any subject, which is not on the agenda. Any person or group desiring to bring an item to the attention of the Commission may do so during Public Comments or by addressing a letter of explanation to: Community Services and Library Director, Monterey Public Library, 625 Pacific Street, Monterey CA 93940. The appropriate staff person will contact the sender concerning the details. INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS supply the Commission with written or oral information that they may wish to discuss or take action by placing the item on a future agenda. 2. Museum and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report June 1- 30, 2011 PUBLIC APPEARANCE PUBLIC APPEARANCE items are reports on action or informational issues that might stimulate public discussion, but that do not require formal noticing as public hearings. You are welcome to offer your comments after being recognized by the Chair. The Chair may limit the time allocated to each speaker. New Business 3. Approve Expenditure of Museum Trust Funds for Memorial Bench 4. Receive Report on Visitor Surveys for Learning About Colton Hall Museum and Presidio of Monterey Museum 5. Approval of Staff Recommendation for Baumer String Quartet Use of Colton Hall in June 2012 COMMISSIONER COMMENTS COMMISSIONERS may ask a question for clarification, make a brief announcement or make a brief report on his or her activities. In addition, a Commissioner may provide a referral to staff or other resources for factual information, request staff to report back to the body at a subsequent meeting concerning any City matter, or direct staff to place a request to agendize a matter of business on a future agenda.
