CALL TO ORDER ROLL CALL CONSENT ITEMS Approval of Minutes 1. Monday, July 23, 2018 On a motion by Commissioner Wojtkowski, seconded by Commissioner O’Neil and carried by the following vote, the Museums and Cultural Arts Commission approved the minutes of July 23, 2018 with corrections. Receive Museums and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report – July 2018 (Not a project under CEQA, per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061.) Acting Community Services Director Copeland reviewed the staff report with the Commission. He highlighted the Monterey Peninsula Archives Crawl on October 13. All the Commissioners are invited to attend. PUBLIC APPEARANCE  Museums and Cultural Arts Commission Minutes Monday, August 27, 2018 3. Receive Report on Museums and Cultural Arts Division Programs FY 2017-18 and Provide Input to Staff (Not a project under CEQA, per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061.) Acting Director Copeland reviewed the statistics of the Museums & Cultural Arts Division programs, its mission statement, the main facilities, and the behind the scenes programs which include restoration and collections. He noted on agenda packet, page 13, under “City Art Collections and Alvarado Gallery Programs”, Historical and Art Collections Programs should be number 6, and Cell Phone Historic Tour Program should be number 7. Commissioner Sovereign asked that the Battle of Monterey event be included in the report. Commissioner O’Neil asked if there is a recognition and appreciation event for volunteers, and Acting Director Copeland said there is an annual event in April. He also added that the Utility Box Mural Program report and application are currently being reviewed by the City Legal Department to be placed as an agenda item for the City Council meeting on September 18, 2018. 4. Receive a Report from Bouchard–Battle of Monterey Bicentennial Subcommittee (Not a project under CEQA, per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061.) Commissioner Sovereign reviewed the Battle of Monterey brochure with the Commission; the committee is working on the proposal for a grant for educational materials, and a video of the reenactment and lectures. He asked if there is there a way for City or the Commission to give “pat on the back” for Bella LaFaso, owner of Bella’s Studio, Roberta Myers and others for creating costumes. He asked the Commission for help on the day of the event to conduct meetings, provide crowd control, and an updated proclamation from the Mayor. Acting Community Services Director Copeland gave kudos to the committee having history Professors Beebe and Senkewicz present lectures. The Commission provided suggestions for promoting wider publicity for the event. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Museums and Cultural Arts 2 Commission Meeting Minutes Monday, August 27, 2018 2  Museums and Cultural Arts Commission Minutes Monday, August 27, 2018 Commissioner Evans presented a six-minute video on some exhibit displays at the museums he visited in the U.S. and Canada. Types of displays he presented were projection, touch screens, video integration, hands on, large wall and static displays, bilingual narration (in live and video displays), and public and utility box art. Commissioner Wojtkowski thanked Director Copeland for setting up a Pacific Biological Laboratories Subcommittee meeting. He wondered if in early September the Colton Hall Interpretive Plan subcommittee could meet. Director Copeland said he would plan that in September. Commissioner Peake said her family visited the Roman Army Museum (Vindolanda) in northern England, and her 11-year-old son said he was interested in the actual artifacts, so to balance all the museum technology even children want to see artifacts. Commissioner O’Neil reported that a number of people voiced strong opposition to the move of the Visitors’ Center from its present location, and the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau executive committee and Board met and decided the issue would be discussed at a full Board meeting next month. He attended the “Coastal Visions” opening and artist reception. He also had a concern that the Monterey area has so many interesting historic places, and museums, and he suggested it would be worth examining the coordination of the assets. Director Copeland said that the Neighborhood Improvement Program awarded funds for the development for an expanded and better coordinated Path of History, which is one of the recommendations of the Path of History Master Plan. Commissioner Wall enjoyed the exhibit and artist reception as well and thanked the staff. NEXT MEETING 5. Monday, September 24, 2018 ADJOURNMENT 6.
