CALL TO ORDER
Chair Wojtkowski called the meeting to order at 4:02 p.m.

PRESENTATIONS
1. Presentation by Kat Morgan: Murals of Monterey and the Walls that Need Them (Not a project
under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)
Action: Received and discussed
Chair Wojtkowski introduced Kat Morgan who provided a presentation about the murals she has
documented throughout Monterey and their significance. Photos of potential mural sites in
Monterey that she and Wojtkowski identified were shown to the Commission. Commissioners
thanked Ms. Morgan for documenting the murals, her presentation, and support.
Thomas announced the Japanese American Citizens League of Monterey will unveil a new
mural on January 22 at 1:00 p.m.
There was no public comment on the matter.
CONSENT ITEMS
On a motion by Commissioner O’Neil, seconded by Commissioner Peake and carried by the
following vote, the Museums and Cultural Arts Commission approved the Consent Item:

PUBLIC COMMENTS
The administrative assistant explained to the public how to participate in the virtual meeting and
provide public comment. Chair Wojtkowski opened public comments: no public comments.
INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS
3. Receive Museums and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report (Not a project under CEQA per
Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)
Action: Received and discussed
Waite highlighted the success of Christmas in the Adobes and expressed thanks to Artifacts
Specialist Leininger, Garibaldi, and Briscoe. Leininger thanked the Monterey Pacific Rotary Club
for decorating Colton Hall for the holidays and expressed thanks to outgoing Colton Hall
interpreter S. Tyler Markley. Waite commented that Markley’s departure reduces Colton Hall’s
interpreter staff to one. She asked Commissioners to let her or Leininger know of anyone who
may be interested.
There was no public comment on the matter.
PUBLIC APPEARANCE
4. Receive and Approve Revisions to the Strategic Plan for FY 2020-2024 (Not a project under
CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)
Action: Received, discussed, and approved
Waite provided an overview of proposed revisions to the Strategic Plan and noted there will be a
proposal to increase Museums staff.
On a motion by Commissioner Evans, seconded by Commissioner Castagna, and carried by the
following vote, the Museums and Cultural Arts Commission approved revisions to the 2020-
2024 Strategic Plan:

5. Receive an Update from the Path of History Subcommittee (Not a project under CEQA per
Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)
Action: Received, discussed, and accepted recommendation
Wojtkowski updated the Commission on the subcommittee’s work. The subcommittee [Evans,
Thomas, Wojtkowski] recommended using the master plan as a working draft and to focus on
creating two or three subareas, with the possibility of center points in each area, to provide
visitors consistent and improved resources in navigating historic sites. This will be a multi-year
project, including pursuing a grant that would fund working with a firm to develop the brief
walking tours. There was a consensus to accept the subcommittee’s recommendation. Waite
will provide the detailed report to Commissioners.

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
O’Neil commented that he was impressed with the amount of activity that took place during the
holidays and thanked everyone. Happy New Year!
Peake commented that she had a great time at Christmas in the Adobes and acknowledged
everyone who was involved with the event.
Thomas invited all to the mural unveiling and grand reopening of the Japanese American
Heritage Center on January 22.
Wojtkowski commented that the former city manager of San Luis Obispo sent him a news article
about murals in downtown SLO and asked that the topic of murals be placed on a future MCAC
meeting agenda for general discussion.

The next meeting will be February 4, 2022.
ADJOURNMENT
Seeing no further business to come before the Museums and Cultural Arts Commission, Chair
Wojtkowski adjourned the meeting at 5:15 p.m.
