MINUTES MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION 01/05/2023 4:00 PM COUNCIL CHAMBER, 580 PACIFIC STREET, AND ZOOM TELECONFERENCE MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Commissioners present: Castagna*, Evans, O’Neil, Peake, Sovereign Thomas, Wojtkowski Commissioner Absent: None Staff Present: Library & Museums Director, Administrative Assistant, Museums Artifacts Specialist *Participated remotely by teleconference This meeting was held with a combination of in-person and teleconference attendance, pursuant to the Ralph M. Brown Act, Calif. Government Code section 54953(e)(1)(C) and the Council's resolution authorizing teleconference attendance at public meetings. CALL TO ORDER Chair Evans called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. ROLL CALL PRESENTATIONS 1. Receive Presentation from Monterey City Attorney Staff (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Assistant City Attorney Salameh presented an overview of the duties of the Museums and Cultural Arts Commission, Brown Act, and committees. There was no public comment on the matter. 2. Receive Presentation from Corey Madden, Executive Director of the Monterey Museum of Art (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Executive Director Corey Madden provided a presentation about the Monterey Museum of Art. There was no public comment on the matter. INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS 4. Receive Update from Library & Museums Director (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Library & Museums Director Edwards updated the Commission on recent activities. There was no public comment on the matter. 5. Receive Museums and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Artifacts Specialist Leininger reviewed the monthly activity report. There was no public comment on the matter. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Commissioner Sovereign announced that the Young Readers Mural unveiling is slated for Saturday, February 18, 2023. Commissioner O’Neil inquired whether there is a need for discussion at a future meeting about the Stanton Center. Commissioner Evans commented on the many different art communities and their varying levels of interest in history and art. He stated the necessity of having adequate Museums staffing to coordinate public/private enterprises. NEXT MEETING The next meeting will take place on February 5, 2022.
