Montpelier  Tree  Board  Minutes  for  December  5th,  2013  Meeting     Members  present:  John  Snell,    John  Akielaszek,  Sarah  Hoffmeier,  Abby  Colihan,  Geoff   Beyer   Unable  to  attend:  Jeff  Schumann   Volunteers  present:  Bob  Troester,  Ken  Libertoff,  Stephanie  Olsen,  and  Ellen  Doyle       ·  Approved  November  Minutes     ·  Sarah  let  the  Board  know  that  John  Snell  has  been  selected  to  receive  the  Tree   Stewards  Award  for  leadership.  All  are  invited  to  the  ceremony  to  be  held  at  the   Statehouse  on  Wednesday,  December  18th  at  5:00  (refreshments  ready  at  4:30).     •  John  A  gave  the  Board  an  update  on  the  Emerald  Ash  Borer  plans;  he  believes  an   important  next  step  is  to  approach  the  City  to  begin  setting  aside  money  for  a   sinking  fund  to  deal  with  an  infestation.  John  A  mentioned  that  Montpelier  is  one  of   the  most  vulnerable  places  due  to  cross-­‐roads,  wood  industry,  and  other  factors  to   the  EAB.  John  S  suggested  having  a  meeting  with  City  Manager  to  discuss  funding  for   removal  (as  needed)  for  both  pubic  and  private  trees  and  then  approach  the  Council.   John  A.  will  set  up  a  meeting.     •  Fundraising  Update:  Ken  said  that  TD  Bank  has  pledged  $200,  the  first  donation;   many  he  approached  indicated  the  summer  and  fall  had  been  “tough  times   downtown”  and  they  might  not  be  able  to  donate  at  this  time.  Abby  C.  suggested   possibly  waiting  a  few  months  to  solicit  donations.  Other  business  members   expressed  concern  the  downtown  improvement  fund  should  include  trees.  John  S   suggested  we  make  a  formal  presentation  to  Montpelier  Alive  in  the  New  Year.  They   will  set  up  a  meeting.     •  Tree  Software  Update:  Bob  reported  that  Open  Tree  Map  may  not  be  a  great   bargain  given  all  the  deficiencies;  other  commercial  software  is  more  costly  but   more  functional.  Geoff  felt  that  for  now  Access  and  Google  Fusion  can  meet  our   needs.  Bob  will  continue  to  explore  options.  Bob  will  also  follow  up  with  Danielle   Fitzko  to  see  what  the  state  is  doing  to  see  if  we  could  possibly  partner  with  them.     •  Update  on  workdays:  Stephanie  and  Geoff  reported  on  work  done  on  two  ½-­‐days   to  fence  riverbank  trees  from  beaver  damage  and  prune.  Eight  students  (14-­‐17  yr.   olds)  participated  each  day;  the  fencing  used  was  not  inexpensive  ($150)  ;  Stephanie   suggested  using  “sandy  paint”  instead  but  Geoff  said  it  could  only  be  used  at  above   freezing  temperatures;  others  asked  if  we  could  use  Front  Porch  Forum  to  solicit   donations  of  fencing  and  paint?  Youth  Build  and  VOTEC  might  both  be  available  for   more.  Stephanie  will  check  and,  if  they  are  available,  schedule  more  work  days  and   let  us  know.     •  Other  business:   •  John  S  expressed  concern  about  the  fact  that  holiday  ornaments  were    being  hung  on  downtown  street  trees.  The  Board  discussed  and  voted  to   support  him  in  asking  that  they  be  removed.     •  Geoff  reported  that  he  is  working  with  MHS  to  build  more  grates,  both   circular  as  well  as  square.  Details  will  follow  at  the  January  meeting.     •  Abby  said  she  is  willing  to  complete  the  Tree  City  USA  application  if  she   can  be  the  raw  data  from  John  S  and  Geoff.     •  John  S  said  he  would  write  the  annual  report  for  the  city     •  Geoff  said  they  removed  a  hazardous  maple  from  Summer  St  park     Meeting  adjourned  at  6:45.       Next  meeting  is  January  2nd.
