Montpelier Tree Board Minutes July 2, 2015 5:35-6:30 pm Montpelier City Hall In attendance: John Snell, Jeff Schumann, Abby Colihan, John Akielaszek; Tree Warden Geoff Beyer Old Business The meeting minutes from the June 4, 2015 meeting were approved. Parade The July 3rd parade is Friday and the large trunk from the silver maple cut down on Liberty Street will be towed behind a Parks Department vehicle. Assembly is in the Meadows area of the City. Recent Tree Planting A honey locust tree was planted in front of the Bailey Road store. Frosted Trees The frosted trees were discussed. These include the East State Street shad tree (by the City Center), the maple (past Shaws), the split leaf maple across the street from Shaws, the ash next to the courthouse, and the red oak in front of Splash. Tree Board Funds Rollover of money in the Tree Board account from one fiscal year to the next is not a certainty. Geoff indicated that the next two weeks are critical as the funds are re-allocated during this period. Protecting Downtown Trees – Options Geoff and John S will meet with Tom McCardle to discuss other options to grates for protecting downtown trees. One option mentioned was a curb around a pit. Upcoming Work Days Geoff indicated that a week from Sunday (namely7/12) he will have volunteers available for tree projects. Jeff mentioned that the nursery needs weed whacking and Geoff will arrange that work sometime during the week of 7/12 – 7/18. John Snell to look for a site to try bare root planting a tree from the nursery this summer (instead of waiting until Fall). We need to work on sidewalk clearance, pruning low branches. This work is scheduled for Tuesday or Wednesday (7/7 or 7/8). EAB John A gave a short presentation to the First Detector class explaining what he and the Montpelier Tree Board are doing to prepare for the arrival of the Emerald Ash Borer. There may be opportunities to coordinate activities with First Detectors in adjacent communities. The meeting adjourned around 6:30 p.m. Next meeting at City Hall: Thursday, August 6th , 5:30-6:30
