Morgantown Municipal Green Team
Sept. 18, 2017, Meeting
Attending: Joey James, Jim Kotcon, Holly Purpura, Erdogan Gunel, Janis Gunel, Karen Kalafat, Joseph Kanosky,
Alex Davis, Penny Thomas (League of Women Voters), Jonathon Rosenbaum, Shirley Rosenbaum, and Christine
Wallace.
Green Team Chair
Joey James announced that he will be resigning and a replacement as Chair is needed.
Paris Climate Resolution-Climate Action Plan
After adoption of the Resolution, City Council asked the Green Team to prepare an Action Plan. Volunteers
included Jim Kotcon, Ryan Wallace, Jing Zhang, Mark Tauger, Rick Landenberger, Ella Belling, and Joey James.
Other suggested names included Jonathon Rosenbaum, Jenny Selin, and Sandra Fallon.
IAC recommendations
After presentation of the IAC report, Council will take up the recommendations in increments. The City Manager
was asked to present “Bite-size” pieces for implementation.
Energy Audits on other City Buildings
Abby Cayton asked for recommendations on other City buildings for an energy audit as part of her internship.
Because plans are underway to remodel the Met Theatre and the Ice rink, those were suggested as timely
possibilities for an audit. The buildings are on different tariffs so Abby will contact Melissa Burch or “Roger” at
BOPARC for energy bills.
Recycling
Karen met with the City manager and Republic (Molly McWilliams) on sept. 11. No contract is finalized yet. They
are working on adding schools and “Blue bins” for commercial clients. The directions for recycling are still unclear,
and an updated list of recyclables, as well as plans for schools and businesses, needs to be reviewed by the Green
Team. Joey and Pam will work with Paul Brake to review the work.
Republic agreed to do quarterly reporting starting in January. No specifics were identified as to what would be in
the reports. The green team recommended that the volume of materials picked up, contamination level (percentage
of refused cans), follow-up calls to violators, and a contamination report from Green Star should be included.
Composting was discussed, but no facility exists in Morgantown, so Republic declined to pick up compostables.
Although composting was included in the contract, the City may need to identify a composting site for this to move
forward.

Morgantown Dam Trash Clean-up
Jenny Selin met with Army Corps of Engineers regarding the trash build-up behind the dam. She discussed the idea
of dong a contest at the WVU College of Engineering to design a solution to trash removal. Republic indicated that
they will haul the trash away if it can be brought to the shore. Joey and Christine will work with Jenny. Holly
mentioned that Kenny Hacher and Chris Dale at MUB had identified the trash as about half trees and lots of plastic.
Meeting adjourned at 7:10pm.
