Call to order
WVU New Student Orientation 2018 changes
Brian Walker: New Student Orientation (NSO) will run from May 31 to
June 29, for a total of 22 sessions. So far, first-year student applications
and deposits are down about six percent, compared with last year. NSO
has been retooled to control ‘melt’ (the number of students who
attend NSO and enroll but who do not attend in the fall). Final
enrollment figures will not be finalized until late August, when
enrollment ends.
Changes in WVU academic suspension policy
Brian Walker: Students whose GPA fall below a 2.0 will be dropped.
These students may appeal and can possibility be readmitted, given a
determined set of criteria. They will have to reach certain benchmarks
and make academic progress in order to stay enrolled.
Rude signage on houses during move-in
Arthur Trussler was absent; this itemed was tabled until the next
meeting.
Section 8 questions
Lisa Darden requested that committee members submit questions
about Section 8 housing to her in advance. James Craig noted that
there are currently occupancy rate problems with student housing.
Rachel Fetty stated that this is good news for families and
professionals, as area homes in the $150K – 175K range are few and sell
quickly when they hit the market. Also, for those renting, leases may
become less restrictive. Lisa noted that Section housing currently has a
waitlist of more than 1,000 people. Section 8 is open to refugees and
legal immigrants.
New Business
Housing Fair: Rachel Fetty unpacked the Housing Fair at the
Morgantown Mall on Saturday, April 21. Rachel will survey attending
landlords and vendors for assessment purposes.
Move-Out Information: John Whitmore stated that the move-out
dumpsters will be in place by April 30 and should be available through
finals week.
Next meeting: May 23 (Canceled)
