Historic Landmarks Commission

MORGANTOWN HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION September 19, 2018 The meeting was called to order at 7:08 pm in the Public Safety Building by Kathy Hanko. Those present were Bill Kawecki, Jessica Eichlin and Kathy Hanko. The minutes from the August meeting were approved. NEW BUSINESS: Plans were shared by Bill for the proposed redevelopment of 461 High St. The property was identified as non-contributing in the 1996 National Register designation. The Commission agreed that as long as it was properly documented before demolition, we have no objection. There is a bronze plaque on the building across the street containing historical information regarding the original Dairy Queen located at the site. We want people to know about it and make sure it is not lost in future development. John Adamik, Jr from SHPO plans to attend the next meeting in October to discuss the 5-year State Historic Preservation Plan. We will ask Shannon to contact him and request that he share this plan with us before the meeting so we will have an informed discussion. OLD BUSINESS: Plans were discussed for the CLG training in Parkersburg September 20-22, 2018. Jessica is registered to attend. Jessica is posting and monitoring the Commission’s Facebook page. She has not received any pictures of the Cemetery Workshop to post. Bill has some to send her and will check with Shannon to see if others are available. The 2019 Roundtable will focus on genealogy and will take the place of our March meeting. We will have some presenters from the WVU History Department under the direction of Jen Thorton, WVU’s new instructor. Plans are on-going. The Cemetery Workshop was very successful. Many stones were cleaned and some repaired with varying techniques. The Chancery Hill Survey is in process and will be submitted by the September 30th deadline. Indian Park historic plaque is in the works. The monument may need some maintenance. Shannon sent a message suggesting that it might be a good option for a clean up work day. We will share that with the group that is organizing to continue the work of the workshop. There is a plan to discuss that possibility at the next Monongalia Historical Society meeting September 19th. There is no further information on the South High Street brick repair.
