Historic Landmarks Commission

MORGANTOWN HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION January 16, 2019 The meeting was called to order at 7:03 pm in the Public Safety Building by Shannon Tinnell. Those present were Shannon Tinnell, Bill Kawecki, Jeanne Grimm, Jessica Eichlin, and Kathy Hanko. The minutes from the December meeting were approved. NEW BUSINESS: Jeanne Grimm and Christie Venham have completed the article on “Historic Oak Grove Cemetery and Its Inhabitants”. It will be published in the Mon CO Historical Society’s Publications and Proceedings. Next month work will begin work on brochures. Plans are to do one for the Commission, two for the WPA walls survey and two for the Sabraton Survey. OLD BUSINESS: The Hazel Ruby McQuain Park improvements comment is complete. The 461 High St Dairy Queen comment is complete. CLG Training/WV Preservation Alliance Conference will be offered this Saturday in Mannington. MHLC Facebook: Jessica has the pictures from the cemetery cleaning and several videos to post. The Genealogy Roundtable will be March 20th at the Aull Center. Jennifer Thornton, her WVU students and Courtney Zimmerman will present their work. Christie Vehnam will share their article on Oak Grove Cemetery. Invitations will be issued to Alex Stockdale to report on the City Building renovations, the librarian at the Aull Center, Rae Jean Seilin and the WV Regional and History Center to speak on genealogy resources. Kathy will provide refreshments and submit reimbursement to the City from the budget. The Chancery Hill Resurvey Grant is complete. It was not accepted by SHPO. There is no time to resubmit so it will be filed and used as a local resource. Consideration for a Multisite Designation for the WPA stone walls will be revisited in 2019 for the next round of SHPO grants at the end of the year. Work continues on the Indian Park marker. There are questions on the wording and funding that have been submitted to the WV Division of Culture and History. Kathy will continue to converse with Matt McGrew and report on the progress. The Sabraton Survey is progressing. 89 usable HPI’s have been created by the WVU students and are under review. Jeanne has talked with Courtney Zimmerman, the consultant about keeping the volunteer hours within the limits defined by the grant.
