Historic Landmarks Commission

MORGANTOWN HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION February 20, 2019 The meeting was called to order at the Public Safety Building on Spruce Street. Attendance: Jeanne Grimm, Jessica Eichlin and Kathy Hanko The minutes were approved as presented. NEW BUSINESS: We have four brochures that were created by WVU students. The Commission will proof and prepare them for publication. Jeanne is working on developing a brochure that explains the work of the Commission and some of the projects it has completed. It will then be available for publicity. OLD BUSINESS: Jessica continues to manage the Facebook Account. She has posted articles and has more in progress. She will also publicize the Roundtable in March. The Genealogy Roundtable scheduled for March 20 from 6-9 pm is in the planning stage. It will take the place of the March Commission meeting. There will be two sections-the first concentrating on Genealogical Research. There will be presentations by the WV & Regional History Center, the Aull Center, Christie Venham with Oak Grove Cemetery, Morgantown WV Family History Center and Rae Jean Selin of Populore. The second section focus on the Sabraton Neighborhood of Morgantown. Courtney Zimmerman will speak on the survey she is doing. Jennifer Thornton and students from her history class will share their work on the survey. This includes information on Listravia Ave, St Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, and the American Tin Plate Mill. The Commission recommends Elizabeth Satterfield’s work on the Sabraton School for publication. The information about the school will be used for an article in the Monongalia County Historical Society Publications and Proceedings. Publicity for the Roundtable will be posted on Facebook and given to the City of Morgantown for posting on their website and in the newspaper. Flyers will be available for posting around town. The next deadline for the multisite designation of the WPA stone walls is September 30th. Indian Park Historic Marker: Jeanne moved and Jessica seconded that money in the budget be used to pay for the marker. Kathy will check with Matt McGrew of WV Culture and History to find out what is involved with that process and how to do it. She will also check to see that the Commission’s name will be on it. In the future the Commission would like to develop a marker for the Oak Grove Cemetery. It may have a different message on the 2 sides-one about the cemetery and one about the Soldiers Memorial. The old marker that was damaged and stored in the basement of the Mon Co Court House has been moved to the Morgantown History Museum and is being repaired so it can be displayed.
