MORGANTOWN HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION August 21 , 2019 The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm in the Public Safety building by Shannon Tinnell. Those present were Shannon Tinnell, Bill Kawecki, Jeanne Grimm, Jessica Eichlin, Kathy Hanko and a guest, Jennifer Thornton. The minutes of the June meeting were approved, there being no quorum last month. NEW BUSINESS: Shannon sent a letter of review for the Dadisman Hall cell tower. The commission supports the idea of working with the Monongalia County Historic Landmarks Commission when they obtain their CLG certificate. The annual report has been received. We worked on filling in the blanks and will need to look up more answers. Carol Allen has helped in the past with typing and sending in the final report. There has been a request to consider a survey for the Hopecrest area of town. A survey would be needed for a national nomination and Jeanne doesn’t think it would meet that criteria. We discussed a possibility of a survey for the Marilla area made up of worker housing. Chris Bailey, a developer requested information and old pictures of the Brock, Reed & Wade building at 204-212 High St. Jeanne sent him pictures and will send him information about tax credits for restoration projects. Jeanne gave a brief tutorial on grant-writing. She introduced us to the WV Historic Preservation Plan and we discussed writing a grant for Multiple Stone Resources from the New Deal Era using the 2 previous reports, Phase 1 and 2. The submission date is October 31. It is a 70/30 matching grant. It would be submitted to SHPO for review then sent for committee review and then submitted to the WV Archives and History Commission. There was a request for information about Fort Hill which was at one time located on the land that is now the Suncrest Town Center. There is nothing left of that past. OLD BUSINESS: MHLC brochures are in progress. The next step is to obtain site maps from the Morgantown City Planner. Three of the students who prepared brochures for their WVU class have responded positively to our request for printable files. Progress is being made on the Hazel Ruby McQuain Park at the riverfront. The Facebook page is being maintained by Jessica Eichlin. The historic plaques for Oak Grove Cemetery and Indian Park are pending at the State Archives and History Commission. Jennifer brought us information on the beginning of plans for the 50th anniversary celebration of WVU’s PRT. Meeting was adjourned. Submitted by Kathy Hanko Secretary
