Historic Landmarks Commission

MORGANTOWN HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION November 23, 2020 The meeting was called to order at 7:03 pm using Zoom by Shannon Tinnell. Those participating were Shannon Tinnell, Bill Kawecki, Jessica Eichlin, and Kathy Hanko. The minutes of the August meeting were approved. OLD BUSINESS: The Zackquill Morgan plaque is pending with the State Culture and History department. A request for an extension has been submitted to SHPO for the Multisite Designation Stone Walls Grant. Jeanne Grimm has completed her service to the Commission and will turn over the information to Shannon so she can follow it through. The Marilla Survey and downtown plaques will receive future consideration. The rough draft for the brochures was shared and several additions and clarifications were made. Kathy will make them and pass them on to the committee to be submitted to Andrew Stacey for completion as this is her last Commission meeting. Jessica maintains the Facebook page. The Oak Grove Cemetery historic plaque is with the State Culture and History Department. Janet Devault sent a letter explaining her group’s plans for continued work of cleaning and restoring headstones. She asked for help and the Commission decided to provide support. Plans are being made for a rededication around Memorial Day 2021. Shannon will contact her to see what she needs specifically from the Commission. The Hastings family has petitioned the State for reconsideration in building 2 roundabouts on Route 857 that would affect their property. Shannon sent a letter of support for their cause. New Business: Jeanne Grimm and Kathy Hanko were thanked for their service on the Commission. There was discussion on ways to advertise and suggestions for attracting new members. It will be advertised through the City of Morgantown and WVU’s History Department. Jessica will post it on the Facebook page asking for volunteers. Submitted by Kathy Hanko
