Historic Landmarks Commission

MORGANTOWN HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION Feb 16, 2021 The meeting was called to order at 7:04 pm using Zoom by Shannon Tinnell. Those participating were Shannon Tinnell, Bill Kawecki, Jessica Eichlin. Also in attendance was Janet Devault from the Oakgrove Cemetery Preservation and Restoration Group. The minutes of the Jan meeting were approved. OLD BUSINESS: Janet Devault presented the MHLC with plans for an Oakgrove Rededication Ceremony around Memorial Day 2021. The group discussed the plan and their concerns with them. Some questions the MHLC had include: What is the nature of the event? How many people do you expect to attend? What about social distancing due to Covid? Who takes care of the cemetery? Are they in favor of this event? Are there available funds through SHPO or PAWV?Can we incorporate QR Codes into the program? Janet will write up a proposal answering these questions and get back to the MHLC. The Oak Grove Cemetery historic plaque is with the State Culture and History Department The Multisite Designation Stone Walls Grant extension was approved by WV SHPO. Shannon Tinnell is now overseeing the grant and submitting monthly progress reports to SHPO. Dr Jennifer Thornton and WVU Public History Students are starting research. Mike Giolouis, the consultant hired to do the work has started back on his research and will be doing a zoom class with the WVU class on March 5, 2021. The rough draft for the brochures was shared and several additions and clarifications were made. Kathy will make them and pass them on to the committee to be submitted to Andrew Stacey for completion as this is her last Commission meeting. Jessica maintains the Facebook page. Shannon and Bill will be added as administrators to add content. The historic brochures were turned in by former commission member, Kathy Hanko. We are currently waiting to hear back from Andrew Stacy Downtown Historic Plaques- no news The MHLC currently has two vacant seats that need to be filled. We need to find a way to recruit new members. Adjourn: 8:07
