MORGANTOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY Approved 2021.07.15 Minutes of the Regular Meeting June 17, 2021 Present: Absent: Also Present: Others Present: Sue Carpenter Judy Panagakos Sarah Palfrey Ellen Hathaway Linda Durfee Kelly Funkhouser Jon Barker Meredith Hartery Penny Pugh Call to order The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Morgantown Public Library convened via Zoom Video Conferencing on June 17, 2021. The meeting convened at 9:02 am, Meredith Hartery, Vice-President presiding, Kelly Funkhouser, secretary. Approval of the Minutes ● May 20, 2021 – Penny Pugh moved to approve the minutes as presented. The motion passed unanimously. PUBLIC FORUM ● Sarah Palfrey introduced John Barker, our new Public Services Manager. CORRESPONDENCE AND COMMUNICATIONS ● Corina Chang’s “A Wild and Weird Calendar Fundraiser: Raising Money for a Good Claws” has been recognized for the innovative and creative approach to marketing by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions as part of IFLA’s PressReader International Marketing Award. Penny Pugh offers her congratulations to Corina and all the models. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES/OFFICERS A. President – None B. Treasurer – ○ Approval of Checks - Financial statements were distributed via email. Penny Pugh moved to approve the checks as presented. The motion passed. REPORT OF THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR & BRANCH UPDATES ● We have been having a busier than usual time since school is out. ● Corina Chang has pulled Google analytics for the Morgantown Public Library System website. Corina Chang, Jon Barker, and Sarah Palfrey will work together to set goals related to the website. ● The West Virginia Office of Technology has connected 500 MB optic fiber service at Morgantown, Cheat, Clay-Battelle locations and Clinton should be connected tomorrow. Arnettsville is already connected to high speed through Comcast. ● Sarah Palfrey has communicated via email with the Literacy Volunteers. Due to space and storage limits within the library, the Literacy Volunteers will no longer have a dedicated space. They are welcome to continue their presence in the library by reserving meeting room space. There is a Literacy cabinet that could be stored on site. Board Minutes – June 17, 2021 – Page 2 ● Friends – Janet Paine would like to resume the book sale in July. ● Big Family Book Club will wrap up next week with a visit from the author. 163 are registered and 101 picked up books. ● Mountaineer Audubon Society has generously donated 20 sets of binoculars. Charlotte Chung has set up Birding Backpacks for check out for a three-week period. They include two sets of binoculars – one for children, one for adults, two guide books and a variety of area trail maps. Additional supplies were purchased to make 3 kits per location. ● Game collections at Morgantown and Cheat Area should be ready to check out before the end of the month. ● Capira app has been delayed due to in-house internet issues. ● Digital library now includes Niche Academy. Niche Academy comes with preloaded videos and has the option to personalize by uploading to this platform. It can include a pathway of videos for staff training along with a quiz for acknowledgement of completion. ● Sarah Scharf has been promoted to Technical Services Manager. Her duties will include all cataloging, collection development and management – including weeding, reports and ordering of library supplies. An Assistant Cataloger is to be hired in July. ● The City of Morgantown will be turning the power off due to restoration for 4-5 days. Power lines will be moving. Meredith Hartery mentioned the possibility of a generator. Sarah Palfrey will follow up with the City. ● Branch reports will be distributed to the board. UNFINISHED BUSINESS ● COVID-19 plan – As of June 21,2021, the City of Morgantown will no longer require staff and visitors to wear masks regardless of vaccination status. It is about 50/50 for public that wears mask. Discussion followed. Sue Carpenter moved that we will remove COVID- 19 policies with the exception of social distancing of furniture and keeping the majority of the plexiglass barriers in place. This will be effective June 21, 2021. The motion passed. ● Invoice Payment Options – It was decided that this is procedural. ● Health Insurance – Tabled until next meeting. NEW BUSINESS ● Investment Committee – There was a discussion of potential committee members. BOARD COMMENTS ● None ADJOURNMENT – Sue Carpenter moved to adjourn. The motion carried unanimously.
