CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, November 13, 2019 12:00 noon Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present: Bren Romano Monteiro, Chair; Ann McGahey, Frank Sonntag, Kelly Trager, Charles Williams Members Absent: Kathryn Whitaker Staff Present: Nicole Harvey Ms. Monteiro called the meeting to order at 12:03 p.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the October 9, 2019 meeting Ms. McGahey made a motion to approve the October 9, 2019 minutes. Mr. Sonntag seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Green Mount P Ms. Monteiro said they had given out the awards and thought they were reviewing the bee report. Mr. Sonntag said he thought he was removed from this subcommittee. Mr. Williams said they need to wait until spring to do anything on this project. There was discussion of removing this from the agenda. b. Town Hall Art Culture, Arts & Pride November 13, 2019 Page 2 of 4 Ms. Monteiro said they have submissions that they will review at the December meeting which is a few days before they change out the artwork. Ms. Harvey said they sent out a press release calling for submissions for Town Hall Art and Art on the Half Shell. Ms. Monteiro said she would like the information on some of the local mom Facebook pages. She said the next Mayor’s Art event would be December 19 at 4 p.m. c. Sculpture Ms. McGahey said they usually reach out to the College of Charleston around this time of the year but do not book an appointment with them until after the new year. Ms. Harvey said they had Mr. Stuart Tessler who did the abstract sculpture that was installed permanently at the Jones Center sand the rust and repaint the sculpture. d. Art on the Half Shell Ms. Harvey said they received one new submission for Art on the Half Shell. She said they do not have to select anything right now. She said that last year they told the artists who were not selected that we would keep their applications on file. She said they had ordered ten new oysters. She shared the new submission and the previous ones received. They decided to make selections for this in January. e. Traffic Box Art Ms. Harvey said the six pieces of art they selected had been sent to the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and are awaiting the encroachment permit. She said she had the sign company working on the graphics. f. Paint the Town This subcommittee was not discussed. g. Ms. Harvey said they talked about identifying an artist to commission and Towne Centre might be open to doing something. They discussed several artists that may be interested and discussed a stipend for it. h. Marketing Ms. McGahey said the Culture, Arts and Pride (CAP) Instagram account had 160 followers. She said she wondered if they could push that through other forms of social media as they had done before. i. Emerging Arts Mr. Sonntag said he had a meeting set for November 22 with staff at Wando. He said that the Town had made a sizeable donation to Wando High School and it was an underutilized asset. He said he was going to inquire about how many events they sponsor and the cost to use the space. They discussed working together with Wando and have joint ventures as there is money in the budget for that. j. Culture Ms. Monteiro said Ms. Whitaker was not present. She said they had discussed the possibility of a video. She said they need to open this up for a request for proposal (RFP) and said there was a budget concern. Ms. Harvey said they may have a partial funding source in the Bridgeside Foundation and they may also choose to apply for Accommodation Tax Advisory Committee (ATAC). Ms. Monteiro said the cultural art center discussion has been tabled while they determine the best way to move forward. She said there is no current funding and Councilwoman Whitley is working to determine if there is a way to fund it. She said their role would be offering ideas and helping to decide what it could be used for. Mr. Sonntag said when and if this project comes about, he would like to be involved as that was what his experience was in. The consensus was to table any discussion of a performing art center until the Commission receives further direction. 4. New Business Ms. Harvey said they have not looked at subcommittee assignments since Ms. Trager came on and said they would have another new member next month. She said she would send them out to everyone. 5.
