CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, June 10, 2020 12:00 noon Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present: Bren Romano Monteiro, Chair; Brad Dunnells, Ann McGahey, Frank Sonntag, Kelly Trager, Kathryn Whitaker Members Absent: Corey Alston Staff Present: Nicole Harvey Ms. Monteiro called the meeting to order at 12:06 p.m. She welcomed Brad Dunnells as a new member of the Culture, Arts & Pride Commission. 1. Approval of Minutes from the March 11, 2020 meeting Ms. Trager made a motion to approve the March 11, 2020 minutes. Mr. Sonntag seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None Mr. Sonntag said kudos on the press for the Mount Pleasant Arts Program. 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Town Hall Art Ms. Monteiro said they had to cancel the April mayor's art reception . Ms. Harvey said they do not know when they can resume the Mayor’s receptions. She said some artists have offered to bring different pieces of art to hang when they come to pick up the ones now hanging. She shared pictures of some of the art and said if anyone had any objections to let her know.  Culture, Arts & Pride Commission July 10, 2020 Page of 2 of 3 b. Sculpture Ms. Harvey said Mr. Jarod Charzewski from the College of Charleston said that the sculptures are on hold due to the school being closed and they may complete them in the fall. c. Art on the Half Shell Ms. Harvey shared pictures of some completed oysters by Ms. Vanessa Grebe, Ms. Marie Slone, Ms. Johanna Hughes, and Mr. Rick Sargent. She said there are two more to be done with one being the George Washington design by Ms. Mimi Woods. d. Traffic Box Art Ms. Harvey said they were all installed for the year and shared photos of them. She has been receiving submissions for next year and they will select in September. e. Paint the Town Ms. Monteiro said there were a lot of positive responses on this project. Ms. Harvey said the Moultrie News did a feature story on Mr. Karl Beckwith Smith who painted the mural on the restroom building at the Farmers Market and Ms. Kris Manning who painted the Koi on Fulton Hair. She said Channel 2 had a feature also and the murals were talked about on radio stations. Ms. Harvey said Grove Properties sent an application for a mural being painted on the Bowman Place Shopping Center. She said the cost of the mural was $13,000 and the Commission had approximately $10,000 left in the budget. She said the mural would be completed by June 30. She asked if the members would like to consider funding for this as one of their projects. She said the artist, Mr. Michael Kuffel, had a lot of murals locally and in several other cities. Ms. Monteiro said they would lose the money if they do not use it. Ms. Harvey said the two projects have been written into Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee (ATAC) budget, so they do not have to apply every year. She said for the Art on the Half Shell program it was $15,000 and for the Community Art Projects it was $24,000. Ms. Whitaker seconded the motion. All were in favor. f. It’s Raining Art There was discussion about respraying some existing poetry stencils onto Towne Centre walkways. g. Marketing Ms. Monteiro said thank you for the great press they had received. Ms. McGahey said CAP had 261 followers on Instagram. h. Emerging Arts Ms. Monteiro said they had been talking about performing arts and how they could shift their attention since they do visual arts so well. She said this was on hold during this time and hopefully Mr. Sonntag and Mr. Dunnells can brainstorm on future ideas. i. Culture Mr. Sonntag said if social distancing was in place it would be hard to schedule anything at Wando but he will stay in touch with them. Mr. Sonntag said the Commission would like to have a new art center at the proposed Rifle Range facility and there are plans to build a YMCA so perhaps they could discuss joinig those projects. He said the land was purchased with Greenbelt Funding sbe o there would stipulations as to how it could be used. 4. New Business There was discussion about the Historic Commission and a development of a public art map and discussion on upcoming events. 5.
