MINUTES
Members Present: Bren Romano Monteiro, Chair; Corey Alston, Ann
McGahey, Frank Sonntag, Kathryn Whitaker,
Courtney Sarre (via speaker phone)
Members Absent: Brad Dunnells
Staff Present: Nicole Harvey
Ms. Monteiro called the meeting to order at 12:02 p.m.
1. Approval of Minutes from the November 11, 2020 meeting
Mr. Sonntag made a motion to approve the November 11, 2020 minutes.
Ms. McGahey seconded the motion. All were in favor.
2. Public Comments
None
3. Report from Subcommittees
a. Town Hall Art
Ms. Harvey said they were continuing as the Commission
instructed in meeting with artists and changing out some of the art
in Town Hall as new submissions are received.
b. Sculpture
Ms. Harvey shared pictures of two new sculpture installs that
had taken place. She said sculpture installatations with the College
of Charleston are now moved from the spring to the fall going forward.

Ms. Harvey said Public Services will install Art on the Half
Shell oysters over the next couple months as schedules permit.
d. Paint the Town
Ms. Harvey said she talked with developer K. Hovnanian of a
new development on Rifle Range Road who was working with Ms.
Gretta Kruesi for a concept on the development’s fence.
Ms. Harvey shared a picture of Mr. Quinton Chaplin’s mural at
the Fire Station on Bowman, which is now fully installed.
e. Performing Arts
Mr. Sonntag has arranged a meeting between Ms. Marie-Louise
Moreto, Ms. Leah Edwards and Mr. Dimitri Pittas with Holy City Arts &
Lyric Opera.
Ms. Harvey said Ms. Courtney Sarre, the Commission’s new
member, was listening by phone. She has a musical theater studio
and wants to help with the Performing Arts Subcommittee.
Ms. Sarre said they could make something happen if they all work
together and said she had a lot of ideas.
f. Culture
Ms. Whitaker said they were continuing the conversation with
the Youth Council about their cultural fair.
Ms. Harvey said they met with Mr. Clark Cromwell from the
Seafarers Society about the Youth Council having a culture fair the
day before the Blessing of the Fleet, which highlights our
community's maritime culture, and this would expand out to Gullah
Geechee, Sweetgrass, and other cultures that exist within our
community to highlight our diversity. She said they would have
performances, demonstrations, food and exhibits.
g. Marketing
Ms. Harvey said press releases were sent out for Ms. Marie-
Louise Moreto's Humanities Award and for Sheperd Dermatology's
Civic Pride Award.

Ms. Harvey shared the interactive art map that was completed
with the Town’s art installations along with other art. She said
Culture, Arts & Pride had 371 followers on Instagram and 571 on
Facebook.
4. Selection of New Chair and Vice Chair
Ms. Harvey said they need to nominate a new Chair and Vice Chair.
Ms. Monteiro made a motion to nominate Ms. Kathryn Whitaker as
Chair and Mr. Frank Sonntag as Vice Chair. Ms. McGahey seconded the
motion. All were in favor.
5. New Business
Ms. Monteiro said they need to discuss subcommittee assignments. She
said Ms. Sarre would be on the Performing Arts Subcommittee. She
suggested the Lucy Beckham partnership be called Student Art.
Ms. McGahey said she would be on the Student Art Subcommittee.
Mr. Alston said if everyone agreed he would like to have an
Unincorporated Areas Subcommittee as he has ideas to help those areas
of Mount Pleasant. For example, he would like to work with the Student
Art Subcommittee and students to revamp and revitalize Sweetgrass
Basket stands. He also suggested having murals painted with the
owners' permission on buildings that are in various areas.
Ms. Whitaker said she would like to be on the Unincorporated
Areas Subcommittee as she was already working with the Youth Council.
The Commission continued discussion on this new subcommittee.
The Commission continued discussion on the subcommittees with
Mr. Sonntag on the Town Hall Art Subcommittee, Ms. McGahey on
Sculpture, and Ms. Monteiro on Art on the Half Shell.
Ms. Whitaker left the meeting at 12:48 p.m.
6. Adjourn
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 12:55 p.m.
