CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, November 11, 2020 12:00 PM Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present: Bren Romano Monteiro, Chair; Corey Alston, Brad Dunnells, Ann McGahey, Frank Sonntag, Kathryn Whitaker Staff Present: Nicole Harvey Ms. Monteiro called the meeting to order at 12:07 p.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the September 29, 2020 meeting Ms. McGahey made a motion to approve the September 29, 2020 minutes. Mr. Sonntag seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Town Hall Art Ms. Harvey shared new submissions of three artistic quilts and three paintings. She said she wanted to get guidance from the Commission until they resume the Mayor’s Art Receptions. She asked if they wanted her to continue sharing the submissions with them or should staff switch them out and hang them as they get them. Mr. Sonntag made a motion to accept the six submissions shown and incorporate them into what is already hanging. Mr. Alston seconded the motion. Ms. Monteiro said she thought the motion should be expanded to accept anything that was submitted unless there was an issue and then staff could reach out to the Commission. Mr. Alston seconded the motion. All were in favor. There was discussion about when the artist receptions would begin and possibly when it did to only have the artists attend. b. Sculpture Ms. Harvey said there is no update but said they would be installing the sculptures in December. c. Art on the Half Shell Ms. Harvey said they were still working with Public Services on scheduling the installations and shared the locations of where they would be installed. She said she would be ordering eight new shells and with the call for submissions they would probably be choosing some in January. d. Marketing Ms. McGahey said they met virtually and came up with a revised plan that she thought was going well so far. Ms. Harvey said they sent out a press release for the Arts and Humanities Award. e. Performing Arts There was discussion about the Village Repertory Theatre’s tribute performance of John Denver and Linda Ronstadt on the Town Hall lawn and how well it was received. Mr. Sonntag said he and Mr. Dunnells met with Ms. Leah Edwards and Mr. Dimitri Pittas with Holy City Arts and Lyric Opera (HALO). He said they thought they would be instrumental in getting the Commission’s Performing Arts Program started. 4. Tree Bank Ms. Harvey said they received a Tree Bank Grant application from the Tidal Walk Homeowner Association. She said the Town arborist reviewed it and the application was on hold as there were a lot of questions and issues and he would need to meet with them. 5. New Business Telephone (843) 884-8517 - Fax (843) 856-2180 www.tompsc.com Culture, Arts & Pride November 11, 2020 Page 3 of 3 Mr. Alston asked how the Culture, Arts & Pride Commission (CAP) works with unincorporated parts of Mount Pleasant such as the communities that are not officially in the Town. Mr. Gergick said he thought the CAP work would be primarily intended for things within the Mount Pleasant area from the Mount Pleasant tax base. He said if there was a proposal that came up, he would not mind sending it up the chain of command. Mr. Alston said he was a large part of the community and he would like to bring more emphasis to the unincorporated black areas of Mount Pleasant. The Commission discussed roundabout technical issues, having paintings in crosswalks near the schools, and the partnership projects with Lucy Beckham High School and other schools. There was also discussion about another subcommittee to research projects for the unincorporated areas of Mount Pleasant. Ms. Whitaker said the Youth Council chose to do a Cultural Fair and would like the Commission to help. She said it was to celebrate all the different cultures represented in Mount Pleasant through food, art and education. Ms. Harvey said the Economic Development Committee wants to do an art contest for a sustainability initiative to have the winning art printed on reusable bags. She said they would like CAP to help facilitate the process and said this was all in the planning stages. The Commission discussed printing, sponsors and placement of the reusable bags. They also discussed the budget aspect of this. The Commission discussed the Charleston Visitor’s Bureau (CVB) wanting to have more of a cultural aspect for tourists and discussed possibly mimicking that for the Town. There was discussion about the Historical Commission map, the Town’s Public Art Map, and the Mount Pleasant Way. a. Chairperson This item was not discussed. 6.
