CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, March 10, 2021 12:00 PM Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present: Kathryn Whitaker, Chair; Corey Alston, Brad Dunnells, Ann McGahey, Bren Romano Monteiro, Ann McGahey Members Absent: Courtney Sarre Staff Present: Nicole Harvey Ms. Whitaker called the meeting to order at 12:00 p.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the February 17, 2021 meeting Mr. Sonntag made a motion to approve the February 17, 2021 minutes. Ms. Monteiro seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Art on the Half Shell Ms. Harvey shared 85 submissions for Art on the Half Shell. The Commission chose eight paintings for the oyster sculptures: flowers, a dog, shrimp, a reflection, sweetgrass basket design, an octopus, a jellyfish, and a dolphin. b. Paint the Town Ms. Harvey said they have $24,000 in the budget for Paint the Town. She shared design images by Ms. Gretta Kruesi for the fence  Culture, Arts & Pride March 10, 2021 Page 2 of 3 on the new development on Rifle Range Road near Six Mile and Hamlin. She said they are requesting $10,000 for this project. Ms. Monteiro said to avoid any issues, they need to make sure the artist knows the clothing should be appropriate on the painting. Ms. McGahey made a motion to approve the request for $10,000 towards the paint design on the fence of the K. Hovnanian Development. Ms. Monteiro seconded the motion. All were in favor. c. Performing Arts Ms. Harvey said they need to table this item until the next month as Ms. Sarre was to provide notes from a subcommitee meeting where they talked about having a performance in August. d. Culture Ms. Whitaker said the Youth Council Cultural Fair would be on April 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Memorial Waterfront Park. e. Unincorporated Areas Mr. Alston said he spoke with the Home Depot managers about the quantity needed and the price of the paint for the sweetgrass basket stands. He said the base color on the stands would be oyster shell. He said the artisans would be able to choose the color for their stand and the colors were Piazza Blue, Pinckney, Sweet Grass, Sea Glass, Lemon Tree and Quill. He said he did reach out to Laing Middle about student involvement in painting and he would be contacting Lowes. He said Ms. Grace Rogers spoke to Habitat for Humanity about the building aspect. He said Ms. Sarre had suggested having concrete floors and they need to study that. He said the weavers have issues with no electricity for fans or heating and the absence of restroom facilities. Ms. Whitaker said she will check on a concrete supplier. The Commission continued discussion on the stands. Ms. Harvey said they should focus on the Mount Pleasant stands and put together a budget to see how to proceed. f. Marketing Ms. Harvey and the Commission discussed the posts on social media and the need for continued posting on projects. 4. Tree Bank Grant Application Ms. Harvey said the Chelsea Park application for $1200 for the Tree Bank Grant had been reviewed by the Town’s Arborist and there were no issues with it. Mr. Sonntag made a motion to approve the Chelsea Park Tree Bank Grant Application. Ms. Monteiro seconded the motion. All were in favor. 5. New Business a. Shopping Bag Art Project Ms. Harvey said the Shopping Bag Art Project was something they had been asked to research in support of the plastic ban. She said they need to discuss the concept, research sponsors, and decide whether to sell or give the bags away. Ms. Harvey gave an update on the Tree Bank. She said there was discussion of a targeted approach with getting schools involved in planting trees. Ms. Harvey said they received approval for the traffic box installations from South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and installations should begin soon. Ms. Harvey said the Village Repertory Theatre was looking to organize a performance on the Town Hall lawn on May 6 with the music of Jim Croce and Carole King. 6.
