CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Monday, June 14, 2021 10:00 AM Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present: Kathryn Whitaker, Chair; Corey Alston, Ann McGahey, Frank Sonntag Members Absent: Brad Dunnells, Bren Romano Monteiro, Courtney Sarre Staff Present: Nicole Harvey Ms. Whitaker called the meeting to order at 10:21 a.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the May 12, 2021 meeting Mr. Sonntag made a motion to approve the May 12, 2021 minutes. Ms. McGahey seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None 3. Budget Review Ms. Harvey said there was some money remaining in the FY2021 budget. She said they received approval to begin working on the Sweetgrass Basket Stands Project. She said with the current price of lumber they probably could not get that donated. She said some of the money in the budget Culture, Arts & Pride (CAP) will pay for the Carly Simon and James Taylor June 25 concert on the Town Hall lawn. The Commission discussed having local musicians on the stage instead of a disc jockey at the next Sweetgrass Half Marathon, and said they would have a Performing Arts Subcommittee meeting about it. Culture, Arts & Pride June 14, 2021 Page 2 of 4 Ms. Harvey said they are getting ready to change the Chuck Dawley Boulevard signal cabinet and the money to complete the owl rewrap on that traffic box will come from Transportation funds. The Commission discussed buying supplies for the sweetgrass basket stand project. They discussed the lumber, primer, and paint for the sweetgrass basket stands, and chose a July 10 start date. They also discussed the cost of concrete for the floors of the stands. 4. Report from Subcommittees a. Art on the Half Shell Ms. Whitaker said they have a new shrimp shell on the first floor of Town Hall. Ms. Harvey said the new submissions they selected several months ago for the oysters are coming in. b. Paint the Town Ms. Whitaker said they saw pictures on Facebook of the mural work being done on the Jones Center wall. Ms. Harvey said that everyone has commented that they liked the murals and are asking about them. She said the murals at Liberty Hill should be installed soon. c. Town Hall Art Ms. Whitaker said the mayor wants to start planning the art receptions again. Ms. Harvey said they talked about this being the first reception in over a year, so they want to make it special and they will work with the Executive Office to set the date and plan. d. Performing Arts Mr. Sonntag said they had talked about revamping the ArtFest idea. He said he had sent a memo that outlines some plans. He said he wanted the minutes to reflect Mr. Alston’s suggestion incorporating a live performance element with the Sweetgrass Half Marathon. Culture Ms. Whitaker said CAP was at the Sweetgrass Half Marathon with a booth. Mr. Alston said he wanted to suggest having a CAP potluck cookout one Saturday for everyone to get together to break bread and get to know each other's families. The Commission concurred. f. Unincorporated Areas/Sweetgrass Basket Stands Ms. Whitaker said they have set the July 10 workday, the Lowe's/ Home Depot shopping trip, and they will get the cement contractors secured. g. Student Art Ms. Harvey asked Ms. Rogers to follow up with the teachers at Lucy Beckham High School about projects. Ms. McGahey asked about the banners they had discussed for Billy Swails Boulevard. Ms. Harvey said that would be something that could be done in the next school year. She said at present they had an art contest for a reusable shopping bag. She said the Town was also launching an online merchandise store and would like to do an annual t-shirt design contest. She said CAP had been asked to oversee those two contests and would choose a slate of winners for the public to vote on. h. Marketing Ms. Whitaker said they had 950 followers on the Facebook page and mentioned Mr. Alston’s Explore Charleston post on Instagram. The Commission discussed starting at 8:00 a.m. on July 10 and set July 17 as a rain date. 5. They briefly discussed the upcoming Sweetgrass Festival and a possible sweetgrass giveaway for the weavers. 6.
