MINUTES
Members Present: Kathryn Whitaker, Chair; Brad Dunnells, Ann
McGahey, Bren Romano Monteiro
Members Absent: Corey Alston, Courtney Sarre
Staff Present: Nicole Harvey
Ms. Whitaker called the meeting to order at 12:08 p.m.
1. Approval of Minutes from the June 14, 2021 meeting
Ms. McGahey made a motion to approve the June 14, 2021 minutes.
Ms. Monteiro seconded the motion. All were in favor.
2. Public Comments
None
3. Vice-Chair Selection
Ms. Harvey said they needed to elect a vice-chair since Mr. Frank
Sonntag passed away. She said that Ms. McGahey and Ms. Monteiro
cannot serve because they had served terms. She said Town Council
had selected Ms. Nicole Thomas as a new Culture, Arts & Pride (CAP)
Commissioner and she would hopefully be at the next meeting.
The Commission discussed Mr. Dunnells being the vice-chair and he
agreed to accept the role.
Ms. Monteiro made a motion for Mr. Brad Dunnells to be the
Commission’s vice-chair. Ms. Whitaker seconded the motion. All were in
favor.
4. Budget Review

Ms. Harvey reviewed the budget. She discussed the Traffic Boxes,
It’s Raining Art, and Performing Arts. She said for Marketing she would
like to print rack cards and start boosted media posts.
The Committee discussed that Performing Arts was going to
combine with ArtFest and they need to make plans for this.
The Commission discussed the Accommodations Tax Advisory
Committee (ATAC) money they receive that was previously stalled
because of some issues but was now written back into their budget.
The Committee discussed the rack cards being a good promotion as
they continue to have opportunities to display them at different events and
could send them to various visitor centers to promote the Town of Mount
Pleasant’s public art.
5. Report from Subcommittees
a. Town Hall Art
(1) Mayor’s Music and Art Reception
Ms. Harvey said the Mayor’s Music and Art Reception would
be August 26 from 5 - 7 p.m. and the Dolly Parton performance
with the Village Repertory Theatre would be at 7:30 p.m.
Ms. Harvey reviewed Town Hall Art submissions and shared
the dimensions of the pieces.
Ms. Whitaker made a motion to accept all the submissions
except for the Charleston artist’s submissions. Ms. McGahey
seconded the motion. All were in favor.
b. Unincorporated Areas
Ms. Whitaker shared notes from Mr. Alston. She said he wanted to
thank everyone who helped with the sweetgrass basket stands and
said they finished seven of the eight stands.
The Committee discussed debris around some of the stands
and flooring solutions. They discussed working on four stands at
Towne Centre in September and Ms. Harvey said she would
talk with Towne Centre about this area. She said the Commission
does have left over lumber but would need to buy paint.
Ms. McGahey suggested they may be able to use concrete
pavers for the flooring of the stands.

Mr. Dunnells said they could not make a performance happen
this summer so they would like to be a part of ArtFest in March.
He said they would not take away from Towne Centre’s
activities but would like to hire local professional performers.
Ms. Richter said they should start booking now.
d. Culture
Ms. Whitaker said they did not have anything on Culture.
e. Student Art
The Committee discussed the yarn wrapped art project by the
students at the Lucy Beckham High School. They said that it
would be displayed for back to school night. Ms. Whitaker said she
would get in touch with Wando High School.
f. Marketing
(1) Art Contest Submissions
Ms. Harvey said the Town started an online store and
wanted to do an official t-shirt design contest. She said they put
out the call for t-shirt submissions and for a reusable tote bag.
She said the selections would be put on social media to allow the
public to choose their favorite. Ms. Harvey shared the tote bag
submissions for the Commission to choose five. The
Commission discussed the purpose of the bag was to promote
environmental stewardship in the Town of Mount Pleasant and
should state that for voting purposes.
Ms. Monteiro made a motion to approve the top five
submissions they had chosen for the tote bags. Ms. McGahey
seconded the motion. All were in favor.
Ms. Harvey shared the t-shirt submissions. The
Commission went back and chose one more submission for the
tote bag. The Commission agreed on six submissions for the t-
shirt.
Ms. Monteiro made a motion to approve the top six
submissions they had chosen for the t-shirt design. Ms.
McGahey seconded the motion. All were in favor.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:06 p.m.
