MINUTES
Members Present: Brad Dunnells, Vice-Chair; Ann McGahey, Bren
Romano Monteiro, Nicole Thomas
Members Absent: Corey Alston, Courtney Sarre, Kathryn Whitaker
Staff Present: Nicole Harvey
Mr. Dunnells called the meeting to order at 12:09 a.m. and welcomed
Ms. Nicole Thomas to the Commission.
Ms. Thomas gave a summary about herself and her interest in being a
part of the Commission.
1. Approval of Minutes from the August 11, 2021 meeting
Ms. McGahey made a motion to approve the August 11, 2021
minutes. Ms. Monteiro seconded the motion. All were in favor.
2. Public Comments
None
3. Budget Review
Ms. Harvey reviewed the budget and discussed the amounts
allocated for various Culture, Arts & Pride projects. She discussed
combining some subcommittees into other ones.
4. Subcommittee Assignments Review
Ms. Harvey reviewed and discussed the subcommittee assignments.
Ms. Thomas volunteered to serve on the Student Art Subcommittee
and volunteered to chair Paint the Town.

a. Arts & Humanities Award
Mr. Dunnells said October was Arts and Humanities Month and the
Culture, Arts & Pride Commission awards an individual or profit/non-
profit business with the Arts and Humanities Award. He said that
person must demonstrate that they have added to the culture, arts,
or pride of our community.
Ms. Harvey reviewed a list of the previous winners. She asked
everyone to email any suggestions.
b. Sculpture
Ms. McGahey said she had reached out to College of
Charleston Sculpture Department to determine when they could go
to the college to view the student’s model sculptures. She will let
everyone know when a date is set.
c. Performing Arts
Mr. Dunnells said this was a new subcommittee and they are
struggling to find their focus. He said they were looking to enhance
ArtFest with local or regional professional talent to raise the level of
talent at that event.
Ms. Harvey said the Town Hall concerts that have been
held have been well received and it had a built-in "stage". She
said they could do a different type of event there also.
d. Unincorporated Areas
Mr. Dunnells said they had cleaned up and revamped six
sweetgrass basket stands. He said they will need to decide on a
date for completing some more stands.
Ms. Harvey said she would send an email to get feedback from
everyone on availability.
e. Culture
Mr. Dunnells said Ms. Whitaker and Mr. Alston were not present to
comment.
f. Student Art
Ms. McGahey said she was chairing Student Art but felt that
Ms. Grace Rogers had been the liaison on this.
Ms. Harvey said Ms. Rogers had reached out to all the school’s
art teachers for ideas. She said she also talked about having

students paint water drains with environmental messaging. She
said when she can hire Ms. Rogers’ replacement, they will reach
out again to the art teachers.
g. Marketing
Ms. Harvey shared an article on the sweetgrass basket stands
in the Charleston Regional Business Journal. She also shared an
article in the South Carolina Recreation and Parks magazine.
The Committee also discussed that there was a newspaper
article and television coverage on the Liberty Hill fence murals.
The Committee discussed the shopping bag initiative.
h. Town Hall Art
Ms. Harvey reminded everyone of the new art at Town Hall.
She said the next reception will be in December.
