CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, June 1, 2022 12:00 PM Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 AGENDA Members Present: Kathryn Whitaker, Chair; Corey Alston, Brad Dunnells, Ann McGahey, Nicole Thomas Members Absent: Bren Romano Monteiro, Courtney Sarre Staff Present: Nicole Harvey Ms. Whitaker called the meeting to order at 12:03 p.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the May 4, 2022 meeting Ms. Thomas made a motion to approve the May 4, 2022 minutes. Mr. Dunnells seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Sweetgrass Basket Stand Project Mr. Alston said they met the previous day with Ms. Liz Boyles (Planning) and Mr. James Aton (Transportation) to finalize the next steps on the basket stands. He said they discussed the eight stands across from Carrabba’s on Highway 17. He said they do not want to tear down and rebuild the stands because there are some property owners that are possibly selling their land. He said they also did not want to leave them alone because they would look unkept, so they decided as a group to move forward on a major renovation to the Culture, Arts & Pride June 1, 2022 Page 2 of 4 eight stands. He said they need to have a day of contracting, and a separate day for priming and painting. Ms. Harvey said they want to make the stands look as good as they can. She said the Town does offer incentives to rebuild when someone buys the parcel of land. She said they need to recruit some knowledgeable construction people. The Commission discussed having some dates to make the stands be functional and then another to beautify them. They discussed reaching out to any contractor friends or contacts. The Commission agreed to assess the stands and tentatively set June 25 as the constructing day and July 16 for finalizing day. b. Student Art Ms. Harvey said she spoke with Ms. Anna Dassing at Lucy Beckham High School. She said they discussed the oysters. She said she would like for the subcommittee to put together a process or guidelines on how that student art project might work. She said they had all agreed to start with Lucy Beckham High School and wanted to move forward with projects such as the storm drain art and pole banners. c. Art on the Half Shell Ms. Harvey said they had not formalized what to put on the plaque area of the oysters. She shared examples of plaques with some different options. The Commission discussed the options and agreed on the laser engraved plaque of $65. Mr. Dunnells made a motion to approve the laser engraved name plate option for the Art on the Half Shell project. Ms. Thomas seconded the motion. All were in favor. Ms. Harvey said Ms. G. M. Whitley and Ms. Helen Hill with the Charleston Visitors Bureau (CVB) had been discussing putting an oyster at the Visitor Center in downtown Charleston. Ms. Harvey said she was thinking of a Come on Over oyster and would create some signage to put with it to link to the public art map. Marketing Ms. McGahey said she and Ms. Monteiro met with Mr. Eric Kramer with Private iPrint Promotions to get some marketing collateral to disperse and use. Ms. Harvey shared some of the marketing materials and discussed the pricing. She showed floor stands, hand fans, magnets, and t-shirts and hats for CAP members. She also showed an example of a brochure. She said if they purchased all the items the maximum cost would be approximately $6,000. Staff and the Commission members discussed the items and what designs would go on the fans and magnets. They also discussed round magnets for gas cap covers. Ms. McGahey made a motion to approve the $5,800 budgetary item for Marketing materials. Ms. Thomas seconded the motion. The Commission and staff discussed budget for the revitalization of the stands. They also discussed that they did not have any murals completed this year, so they have their Community Arts Project Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee (ATAX) funds as well. All were in favor. The Commission discussed the landscaping around the basket stands. They also discussed Culture, Arts & Pride having a stamp or seal to place on the projects. 4. New Business a. Arts Center Update Ms. Harvey said the Town was no longer in negotiations for a Community Arts Center. She said the owners decided to use the space for their own business. She said there will be Juneteenth celebration at the Jennie Moore Elementary School. Ms. Whitaker said she spoke with Ms. Peg Hughes who works Roper Hospital Mount Pleasant, and they want to collaborate on some type of visual art program in the hospital lobby.
