CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, May 4, 2022 12:00 PM Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present: Brad Dunnells, Vice Chair; Corey Alston, Ann McGahey, Bren Romano Monteiro, Courtney Sarre, Nicole Thomas Members Absent: Kathryn Whitaker Staff Present: Nicole Harvey Mr. Dunnells called the meeting to order at 12:04 p.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the April 6, 2022 meeting Ms. McGahey made a motion to approve the minutes of the April 6, 2022 meeting. Ms. Monteiro seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None 3. Arts Center Update Mr. Steve Gergick, Recreation Director, said the Town was pursuing a facility to provide a recreational arts center. He said that negotiations had not been completed so there was nothing to report. He said they want to have a facility that can be leased to an organization for them to run and operate it. The Commission had discussion about an art center and expressed their opinions on it. 4. Report from Subcommittees a. Civic Pride Award  Culture, Arts & Pride May 4, 2022 Page 2 of 3 Ms. Harvey shared photos of the nominations for the Civic Pride Award. The Commission discussed the nominations. Ms. Monteiro made a motion to nominate Alchemist Beverage Company for the Civic Pride Award. Ms. Sarre seconded the motion. All were in favor except for Mr. Dunnells abstaining. b. Performing Arts Mr. Dunnells said the subcommittee would get together to discuss the application form. Ms. Harvey said she went through the form, made some edits, and will send it to the subcommittee for review. c. Student Art Ms. Harvey said she spoke with Ms. Anna Dassing, the principal at Lucy Beckham High School, about an art collaboration. She said Ms. G. M. Whitley has been supportive and now Mr. John Iacofano has talked with the Charleston County School District about ways that the Town can support them and work with them on art projects. She said he was wanting to get an oyster in a school before the end of the school year. She said before they get into details, they need to create a process. The Commission discussed the various aspects of student art. d. Sweetgrass Basket Stand Project Mr. Alston said the Towne Centre stands were finished and they painted the stands close to Brickyard Plantation. He said he there were eight stands across from Carrabba’s that are in rough shape that he would like to work on next. He would like to have participation by community members for work and supplies. Ms. Harvey said she would set up a meeting to speak with Ms. Liz Boyles and someone from Planning who can speak about potential future developments in that area. Ms. Harvey said the Town does not own the stands and most are on county property and not the Town’s. They decided the subcommittee will meet to make plans. e. Culture Ms. Harvey said this encompasses the sweetgrass stands. f. Marketing Ms. McGahey said she and Ms. Monteiro worked the Culture, Arts & Pride table at the Blessing of the Fleet. She said they talked about some items to have at future events such as a bubble machine, an oyster shell, magnets, a vertical banner, and a takeaway brochure with a QR code that could link people to things that Culture, Arts & Pride (CAP) does. The Commission discussed various other ideas for Marketing. Ms. Harvey said Ms. Whitley had been meeting with Ms. Helen Hill, with the Charleston Visitor’s Bureau on various things. She said they would like to put one of CAP’s oysters in the Visitor’s Center downtown with a QR code to the public art map and have information about CAP. 5. New Business Ms. Harvey said that the Sweetgrass Festival will be held on July 23. The Committee discussed the upcoming meetings and talked about skipping one of the summer months. Ms. Harvey said October 16 was the Children’s Day Festival which was a great opportunity for CAP to have an exhibit. The Commission discussed purchasing some marketing products. They also discussed the funds for the different subcommittee budgets. They also discussed having Culture, Arts & Pride clothing, and signage at the different events. 6.
