CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, April 6, 2022 12:00 PM Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present: Kathryn Whitaker, Chair; Brad Dunnells, Ann McGahey, Bren Romano Monteiro, Courtney Sarre, Nicole Thomas Members Absent: Corey Alston Staff Present: Nicole Harvey Ms. Whitaker called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the March 2, 2022 meeting Ms. McGahey made a motion to approve the March 2, 2022 minutes. Ms. Monteiro seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Town Hall Art Ms. Harvey said the next Mayor’s Music and Art Reception would be April 21, followed by a performance of Laurel Canyon Part II by the Village Repertory Theatre. She shared the submissions received for Town Hall Art. The Commission discussed and chose the submissions to be hung on the walls at Town Hall. b. Student Art Ms. Harvey said there was some discussion with Council members Ms. G. M. Whitley and Mr. John Iacofano about  Culture, Arts & Pride April 6, 2022 Page 2 of 3 working with the area schools. She said Mr. Iacofano had been meeting with the Charleston County School District on various items with one being having oyster sculptures at all the Mount Pleasant schools. She discussed the approximate cost of the Town giving the oysters to the schools. Commission members discussed concerns about schools having fund raisers for this and discussed the schools possibly having art contests. They also discussed having Council Members bring ideas for any projects to the Commission first due to the financial aspect of it. They agreed the subcommittee needs to meet on this. c. Performing Arts Mr. Dunnells said they still need to meet to discuss getting new performers and he will review the application form. Staff and Commission members discussed Town Hall lawn performances and using the sectional stage. d. Culture Ms. Harvey discussed the sweetgrass basket stand painting and she said all the cluster ones were complete. Ms. Whitaker said she thought the next ones were between Fulton Lane and Hamlin Road and some needed repair. She said Mr. Alston was going to reach out to the artisans associated with those. Ms. Harvey said she would talk with the Planning Department about the real estate aspect of the properties that the stands are on. Ms. Thomas said she visited the art gallery across from GDC and was hoping that their outside building space would be an option for the Commission to place a mural. e. Art on the Half Shell Ms. Harvey said that Ms. Whitley suggested painting an oyster with chalkboard paint and keeping it for Culture, Arts & Pride events. Marketing The Committee and staff discussed that Ms. Dani Fraser had been busy with marketing for the Culture, Arts & Pride Commission. They discussed the article in The Moultrie News about the sponsored oysters and discussed a new social media presentation. 4. New Business a. ArtFest Ms. Harvey said this was supposed to be changed to the Blessing of the Fleet. She said they will have a tent at the festival to combine some Town departments and they will need volunteers to work at the booth on April 24 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. The Commission discussed the Civic Pride Award and are to submit suggestions for this, so they decide on the award during the next meeting. Ms. Monteiro said that on March 8 she and Ms. Harvey met with the Mount Pleasant Community Arts Center staff. They want to continue to have the conversation about how to get a community arts center. She said there was discussion about the funding for it. 5.
