CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, March 2, 2022 12:00 PM Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present: Kathryn Whitaker, Chair; Brad Dunnells, Ann McGahey, Bren Romano Monteiro, Nicole Thomas Members Absent: Corey Alston, Courtney Sarre Staff Present: Nicole Harvey Ms. Whitaker called to order at 12:04 p.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the January 12, 2022 meeting Ms. Monteiro made a motion to approve the January 12, 2022 minutes. Ms. McGahey seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Art on the Half Shell Ms. Harvey shared the submissions she had received. The Commission members reviewed and discussed their favorites and chose nine with three alternates. b. Sweetgrass Basket Stand Project Ms. Harvey reminded everyone that March 19 was the next painting date for the stands at Towne Centre. She said she will re-send the invite. c. Student Art  Culture, Arts & Pride March 2, 2022 Page 2 of 3 Ms. Monteiro said she reached out to the art teacher at Laing Middle School, and she was interested in collaborating. She said there was an opportunity in addition to art to include orchestra, poetry, and other interests. Ms. Thomas said she thought they should move on with the sculpture project because the School of the Arts had expressed interest, but they have not followed up. She said that they need to try to get the schools involved on projects. d. Town Hall Art Ms. Harvey said they will be selecting the art for Town Hall Art at the next meeting and the Mayor’s Art & Music reception would be April 21. She said Moultrie Middle School would be performing during the reception. She said after the reception they will present Laurel Canyon Part II with the Village Repertory Theatre on the Town Hall lawn. e. Performing Arts Ms. Harvey asked if the Commission wanted to sponsor the performance after the mayor’s reception and have that be one of the Culture, Arts & Pride’s (CAP) performances. The cost would be $1,700. Ms. Thomas made a motion for CAP to sponsor the Laurel Canyon performance on April 21. Ms. Monteiro seconded the motion. All were in favor. Mr. Dunnells said that the Performing Arts Subcommittee also needed to meet and agree on the submission criteria for the form. f. Culture Ms. Thomas said they talked previously about murals, and she suggested several possible sites and asked about the submission process. The Commission and staff discussed the budget for Community Art Projects and where the mural funding comes from. They discussed that they do not have public submissions for the murals as they had vetted artists for them, or a business may have their own artist connection. Marketing Ms. Monteiro said they had a subcommittee meeting which was to meet Ms. Danielle Fraser, the new Administrative Assistant, to share all the activities and projects of CAP. 4. New Business a. ArtFest Ms. Harvey said ArtFest was on March 12 and CAP usually had an information table with an activity and suggested a blank oyster along with oyster coloring sheets. She said she would send an email for signups. Ms. Harvey said they are in the process of transferring the Tree Bank Grant to the Planning Department. She said there would be an Environmental Commission but in the interim, CAP will be reviewing any applications. Ms. Monteiro said there was a meeting with Mayor Haynie, Ms. Marie-Louise Moreto, and her team from the Mount Pleasant Community Art Center along with others. She said there had been conversations of a performing arts venue. She said they discussed a possible referendum and making the community more aware of this. Ms. Harvey said the College of Charleston Art Study completed several years ago showed public support for more arts offerings. Ms. Marie-Louise Moreto said the art center should be a stand-alone and they discussed it might not be the best time for a referendum for several reasons. She said the 2016 referendum for several facilities failed by four percentage points because there was no grandfather clause and no information shared with the public about it. She said now there was very little time and next year may be better. 5.
