CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, January 12, 2022 12:00 PM Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present: Kathryn Whitaker, Chair; Corey Alston, Brad Dunnells, Ann McGahey, Bren Romano Monteiro, Courtney Sarre Members Absent: Nicole Thomas Staff Present: Nicole Harvey Ms. Whitaker called the meeting to order at 12:04 p.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the December 1, 2021 meeting Ms. Monteiro made a motion to approve the December 1, 2021 minutes. Ms. Sarre seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Traffic Box Art Ms. Harvey shared submissions for Traffic Box Art. She said they have a budget for five or six boxes to be wrapped. The Commission discussed the submissions and chose six of their favorites. b. Performing Arts Ms. Harvey said they need to have a subcommittee meeting to finish the Performing Arts Application form. Ms. Sarre left the meeting at 12:39 p.m.  Culture, Arts & Pride January 12, 2022 Page 2 of 3 The Committee and staff discussed performers for the Half Marathon on February 26 even though it was not a Culture, Arts & Pride Commission event. They also discussed having a float in the Christmas Parade in December. c. Sweetgrass Basket Stand Project Mr. Alston said if anyone wanted to help, he and Mr. Dunnells were going to work on the unfinished Boone Hall stands on January 18 at 12:00 p.m. Ms. Sarre returned to the meeting at 12:45 p.m. Mr. Alston suggested January 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to finish the stands at Towne Centre and said some of the basket weavers want to help. The Commission discussed and agreed on the date and time. d. Culture Ms. Harvey asked for everyone to look for nominees for the Civic Pride Award. She said it was aimed at homeowner associations, developments, or businesses that project a creative or inviting improvement. e. Sculpture Ms. Harvey said Mr. Austin Darby was working on the sculpture that the Commission had chosen. The Commission and staff discussed the dilapidated sweetgrass basket stands. There was discussion that the Town had rebuilt some stands with previous road construction but was not in the business of tearing down stands. They discussed only focusing on the stands that the Town did rebuild in the next six months and then finding out who the other stands belong to. f. Marketing Ms. Harvey said they had some good interviews for the Administrative Assistant position and marketing would be a large part of the job. 4. Ms. Monteiro nominated Ms. Kathryn Whitaker for Chair and Mr. Brad Dunnells for Vice Chair. Mr. Alston seconded the motion. All were in favor. 5. New Business Ms. Susan Haynes with the Moultrie News said they have a client who would like to have an art contest with local students in K- 12. She said she wanted to get some feedback and suggestions from the Commission to get something together. Ms. Harvey said they could get the student art group of Ms. McGahey, Mr. Alston, and Ms. Thomas together to think of possible projects. She said that the Park West Program Building and the Jones Center have the same art hanging system as Town Hall to hang art. The Commission discussed supporting children’s art and possibly having banners around the schools with their art. 6.
