CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, December 1, 2021 12:00 PM Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present: Kathryn Whitaker, Chair; Corey Alston, Brad Dunnells, Ann McGahey, Nicole Thomas Members Absent: Bren Romano Monteiro, Courtney Sarre Staff Present: Nicole Harvey Ms. Whitaker called the meeting to order at 12:04 p.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the November 10, 2021 meeting Ms. McGahey made a motion to approve the November 10, 2021 minutes. Ms. Thomas seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Tree Bank Grant Ms. Harvey said the application was from the Hamlet Square Homeowner’s Association that created a tree barrier between their neighborhood and I-526. She said they are requesting $2,000. She said approval was received to grant the funds if the Commission agreed. The Commission discussed the Hamlet Square project. Ms. Thomas made a motion to approve the Hamlet Square Homeowner’s Association application for the Tree Bank Grant. Mr. Alston seconded the motion. All were in favor. b. Sculpture Culture, Arts & Pride December 1, 2021 Page 2 of 3 Ms. Harvey shared the proposal from a College of Charleston graduate that the Commission had all selected through a series of emails. She said the sculpture would be getting worked on and then installed. Ms. Harvey asked Ms. Thomas if she had talked with the School of the Arts. Ms. Thomas said she emailed Ms. Anne Cimballa and she said she was interested and was waiting to hear back from her. Ms. Harvey said after the holidays they should plan a conference call with her and discuss the logistics and budget. c. Town Hall Art Ms. Harvey shared the Town Hall Art submissions with the Commission. She said one of the submissions would not be appropriate for Town Hall and another series by Ms. Kris Manning may need a separate exhibition due to the size. She discussed Holy City Arts and Lyric Opera (HALO) being at the Mayor’s Music and Art reception. The Commission discussed and agreed to use all the submissions except the one not appropriate for Town Hall and Ms. Kris Manning’s with the plan to discuss a special display. d. Traffic Box Art Ms. Harvey asked to defer Traffic Box Art until January or February as they cannot be installed in the cold weather and there was not a lot of submissions. e. Performing Arts Mr. Dunnells said they as a committee need to review the formal application to open the submissions. Ms. Harvey said she and the subcommittee need to work on it together to get it completed. f. Sweetgrass Basket Stand Project Mr. Alston said they completed one additional stand and primed some others. He discussed finishing a couple of the stands and said the Towne Centre stands would probably take a full day. He said they need to decide on a date and time. g. Culture There was no update. Marketing Ms. Harvey said they have been doing their best and had help from a Marketing Coordinator and Communications staff. She said that when they hire the new Administrative Assistant in January, they want to focus on artist spotlights and other informative avenues. 4. New Business Mr. Alston said Culture, Arts & Pride (CAP) was busy and asked about having a logo designed for CAP to put on the projects they have completed. Ms. Harvey said they had discussed it in the past. She said they do not have a logo specifically for CAP, but they have used the Town logo and put Culture, Arts & Pride Commission underneath it. She said they could explore it and have an art contest. She said she would need to get approval for this. Ms. McGahey said she had problems referring to CAP as CAP instead of Culture, Arts & Pride as people do not know what it is. She thought it would be easier for people to understand if it was spelled out. Ms. Harvey discussed having the CAP meetings first week of each month. She said she will send out email for input. 5.
