CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, September 7, 2022 12:00 PM Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 Minutes Roll Call. Present: Brad Walbeck, Ann McGahey, Bren Romano Monteiro, Corey Alston, Kathryn Whitaker Absent: Nicole Thomas, Courtney Sarre Staff Present: Nicole Harvey, Danielle Fraser, Tracy Richter Ms. Whitaker called the meeting to order at 12:10pm. 1. Approval of Minutes from the June 1, 2022 meeting a. Ms. Whitaker called for motion to approve minutes. b. Motion: Minutes from June 1, 2022 meeting, Action: Approve, Moved by Corey Alston, Seconded by Bren Romano Monteiro. Motion passed unanimously. 2. Public Comments a. Ms. Whitaker moves passed Public Comment as no members of the public were present. 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Sweetgrass Basket Stand Project Telephone (843) 884-8517 - Fax (843) 856-2180 www.tompsc.com (1) Ms. Whitaker asks for an update on the Sweetgrass Basket Stand Project from Mr. Alston (2) Mr. Alston gives report on Sweetgrass Basket Stand Project. Mr. Alston gives update from commi�ee member, Nicole Thomas regarding plants for landscaping the sweetgrass basket stands. (3) Mr. Alston, Ms. Whitaker, and Ms. Harvey discuss dat,es materials, and volunteers for the pain�ng and roof repairs of stands. Ms. Whitaker suggests two days depending on school schedules and poten�ally using students needing service hours. (a) Mr. Alston proposes Sept 24th with Sign-Up Genius (b) Mr. Alston and Ms. Harvey discuss landscaping maintenance with Public Services (c) Ms. Harvey and Mr. Alston discuss usage of stands by occasional and long-standing basket weavers. (d) Ms. Whitaker explains she has contact informa�on for some volunteers to add to sign up. (e) Ms. Monteiro suggests contac�ng the High Schools for volunteers. Ms. Harvey suggests u�lizing prior volunteers and including those from Seacoast Church. (4) Ms. Whitaker inquires about landscaping on the same day. Mr. Alston and Ms. Harvey discuss the size of the project and tabled the project for a later date and a�er communica�on with the garden club. (5) Ms. Harvey and Mr. Alston discuss cost of the panels and what is s�ll needed to finish the roofing project. Ms. Harvey proposes reviewing funds in budget to cover cost. b. Student Art (1) Ms. Harvey gives update now that school has begun of the plan to move forward, beginning with Lucy Beckham High School with the help of Ms. McGahey. Town Hall Art (1) Ms. Harvey is looking for dates for the Mayor's Art Reception and proposes moving the Culture, Arts, & Pride Commission meeting from December 7th to November 30th to accommodate all holiday events. All Commission members agree. (2) Ms. Harvey gives recap on previous reception and clarifies details of reception. Ms. Harvey reminds members they will be picking art at the November 30th meeting. ci. Marketing (1) Ms. Whitaker and Ms. Monteiro discuss the brochure designed by Ms. Fraser, the chalk painting of the oyster, the banners, and fans. (2) Ms. Harvey talks about the Hispanic Heritage Month events beginning Friday, September 16th which will include a concert and salsa lessons on the Town Hall lawn. (3) Ms. Whitaker mentions the artist at Roper Mt Pleasant Hospital. Artist will be onsite Tuesday, September 20th (4) Ms. Harvey reminds members of upcoming events: (a) Children’s Day Festival at Park West on Sunday, October th 16 12pm-5pm (b) Holiday Parade December 11th (c) Ms. Monteiro, Mr. Walbeck, and Ms. Whitaker discuss overview. (d) Ms. Harvey explains float rentals, day of procedures, materials, schedules, and brief rules. Proposes marketing committee handles planning. Other members discuss themes. Ms. Richter explains rules for float decorations. (5) Ms. Monteiro and Ms. Harvey clarify the dates of the Holiday market on December 10th , the parade on December 11th, and the Reception is tentatively December 13th. (6) Ms. Harvey reminds members of the mural on Rifle Range Road at 1021 Rifle Range. Ms. Fraser clarifies location. Mr. Walbeck mentions the dog and cat art. (1) Mr. Alston inquires as to whether the group does fundraising and proposes an oyster fundraiser. Ms. Harvey explains the Town provides ample funds for current projects and how fundraising and donations are handled. (2) Ms. Monteiro inquires about the reusable grocery bags. Ms. Harvey recaps the process for the bags and explains how they are being distributed. Adjourn Ms. Whitaker adjourns meeting at 12:50 pm.
