CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, March 01, 2023 12:00 PM Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 Minutes Present: Katherine Whitaker (Chair), Brad Dunnells, Bren Romano Monteiro, Corey Alston Absent: At the time of the meeting there were three vacant seats on this commission. Staff: Nicole Harvey, Danielle Fraser Meeting called to order at 12:05 pm 1. Approval of Minutes from the February 01, 2023, meeting Ms. Katherine Whitaker moved for approval of the February 1, 2023, minutes; Ms. Monteiro seconded. Passed unanimously. 2. Public Comments No members of the public were present. 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Art on the Half Shell Ms. Harvey began discussion with an update on the budget for the project and vandalized half shell. Ms. Harvey suggested paying the artist (Joanna Hughes), of vandalized art, for another half shell artwork piece. All members agreed.  Ms. Harvey presented new submissions for 2023 and reviewed older submissions. Members discussed and chose six artworks and three back up artists for new half shells to be made. b. Student Art Ms. Harvey informed committee members that she met with the Wando High School art teacher and is in the process of setting up a meeting with the Lucy Beckham High School art teacher regarding student art projects. Ms. Harvey gave an update about a meeting with the Charleston County School District administration regarding student art projects. CCSD agreed to be part of the Town of Mount Pleasant student art projects and details were discussed. Ms. Harvey asked committee members if they agree to work with Wando High School and Lucy Beckham High School. All members agreed to give the high schools two half shells and take submissions for the artwork. c. Sculpture Ms. Harvey informed the committee that the tree sculpture project is not moving forward. d. Sweetgrass Basket Stand Project Ms. Whitaker opened the discussion stating that they had to cancel the last scheduled workday due to weather conditions. Ms. Harvey gave an update on the rescheduled workday on Saturday, March 25th. e. Marketing Ms. Harvey reminded members that ArtFest is on Saturday, March 11 and discussed booth coverage. 4. New Business a. Ms. Whitaker asked if there was any new business. Ms. Harvey gave an update on the upcoming meeting, next week, to fill three vacant seats. There was a discussion addressing questions and possible candidates. b. There was a discussion about a previously mentioned request to name a Poet Laureate for the Town of Mount Pleasant. Ms. Whitaker asked if they were motioning to approve Heather Artushin as the TOMP Poet Laureate. No motion was made at this time. Discussion continued regarding creating parameters and a submission process to select a Poet Laureate. Ms. Harvey stated that they will come up with a submission form and send it to all committee members. 5. Reminders a. A reminder was given about the April meeting. Instead of being on the first Wednesday of April, it will be the last Wednesday of this month, March 29 th.  b. Ms. Whitaker reminded that ArtFest is on Saturday, March 11th. March 25th is the next Sweetgrass Basket stand volunteer workday. 6. Adjourn Meeting adjourned at 12:57 pm.
