TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA RECREATION COMMITTEE Tuesday, June 4, 2019 Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room, 3rd Floor 100 Ann Edwards Lane, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present: Gary Santos, Chair; Tom ORourke, G. M. Whitley Staff Present: Eric DeMoura, Steve Gergick Mr. Santos called the meeting to order at 9:50 a.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the May 6, 2019 meeting Mr. ORourke made a motion to approve the May 6, 2019 minutes. Ms. Whitley seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None 3. Recognition of the Mount Pleasant Special Olympics Powerlifting and Swim Teams Ms. Shelli Davis introduced the Mount Pleasant Special Olympics Powerlifting and Swim Teams. She highlighted their wins at a recent competition. She thanked the Committee for recognizing the athletes and said that they represent Mount Pleasant well at the regional, state, national and international level. 4. High level Overview Presentation of the Recreation Department MPRD Overview Presentation June 2019 Mr. Gergick presented a Department Overview, Participation and Membership in FY19, Special Events, Facility List, Fee Comparison, Projected Revenue and Expenses FY19, Rental Income in FY19, 2017 Master Plan Observations, 2017 Master Plan Recommendations, and Capital Projects. Mr. Gergick said they had discussed the fee structures specifically with rental facilities. He said in FY19 they are projecting $138,000 rental income. He said that because of the discounts they had provided for some of the rental groups for different sports they kept track of how much they had gifted. He said for FY19 this amount totaled $273,250. Mr. ORourke asked about the metric for the gifted portion. Mr. Gergick said there were agreements they had with the clubs last year they continued giving the fields at the reduced rental rate as they had over the years. Mr. Santos said that for the record there was a statement made by a Council Member who was Chairman of the Recreation Committee at the time that if they were ongoing in building their fields the Town would consider extending if for a year. He said that in order to avoid a lawsuit the Committee gave them that year because they were already building it. He said they ran into issues where they could not finish and wanted another year and the Committee denied that request. There was discussion between the Committee and staff and the department was directed to give Mount Pleasant residents priority in signing up for camps. Committee and staff discussed fees for rentals and participation. Staff was directed to put together proposed fee changes to present to Committee. There was discussion on a possible referendum in the future. 5.Program/projects update Mr. Gergick gave a program/projects update and provided information on the departments activities. 6.Adjourn There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 10:38 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Karen Bedenbaugh, 6/4/19
