Present: Laura Hyatt (Chair), Gary Santos, Jake Rambo
Staff present: Steve Gergick, Eric DeMoura
1. Call to order
Called to order at 10:00 a.m.
2. Approval of Minutes from the June 5, 2023 meeting
Mr. Santos motioned to approve and Mr. Rambo seconded; all in
favor.
3. Public Comments
Perry Rourk (2004 Brick Kiln Parkway) stated that he was
available to answer any questions regarding the Recreation Advisory
Commission’s recommendation for the open space at Faison Road.
Mayor Will Haynie (316 Mallard Court) offered considerations
regarding the effects of item 4.
John Iacofano (388 Overseer Place) stated the goal of item 4 is
to be a revenue neutral project.
4. Discussion regarding the Senior Center/Community Center
feature as part of the planned Faison Road property project
Ms. Hyatt asked for input from committee members and staff
regarding a Senior Center/Community Center at the Faison Road
property project. Discussion followed.
Mr. Santos stated seniors were asking him for a senior center in
northern part of Town.
Mr. Rambo stated that it being so early in the project, there is a
need for staff suggestions and conversations with Landmark. He
does not expect to see a carbon copy of the current Senior Center.
Ms. Hyatt stated her hope for the project to be revenue neutral
and asked about partnering with other businesses and organizations.
Mr. DeMoura stated he would take the lead in partnering with
outside organizations depending on how the space develops.
Ms. Hyatt suggested starting to think about initial uses for
building.
Mr. Santos stated the benefits of the potential new facility for
seniors and children and his desire for the project to be revenue
neutral.
5. Program/projects update
Mr. Gergick provided the committee with an update on program
registrations, the Sweetgrass Festival, the Farmers Market, Summer
Music & Movies starting August 4th, the Mayor’s Art Reception on
August 16th and the Football Jamboree on August 26th. He updated
the committee on the projects occurring at Waterfront Park, Carolina
Park, and Park West Pool.
Mr. Rambo sought clarification on facility rental revenue and the
opening date for Carolina Park.
Mr. Santos commented on the increase in Senior Center
memberships.
