Present: Laura Hyatt (Chair), Gary Santos, Jake Rambo
Staff Present: Steve Gergick, Christiane Farrell
1. Call to order
Called to order by Ms. Hyatt at 10:00 a.m.
2. Approval of Minutes from the July 31, 2023 meeting
Mr. Santos motioned to approve and Mr. Rambo seconded; all in
favor.
3. Public Comments
Rev. Rob Dewey (598 E Hobcaw Drive) stated that he has had a
great experience with Recreation Department staff and their support
for pickleball.
Bren Monteiro (1461 Hidden Bridge Drive) stated that she was
representing the Culture Arts and Pride Commission to answer
questions about their previous presentation in August regarding their
recommendation for a Town Community Arts Center.
4. Review of the Culture, Arts & Pride Commission’s
recommendation regarding the process for a Town Community
Arts Center
Mr. Gergick provided a summary of previous discussion and the
process leading to the current recommendations.
Ms. Hyatt asked for clarification on the order of next steps in the
process. Discussion of recommendations followed.
Mr. Rambo stated that this is not ready to go back to Council yet.
He recommends that town staff put together a timeline and refine the
proposed process. Mr. Santos agreed.
Ms. Hyatt asked that the timeline outlining the process include
the RFP. Ms. Farrell concurred.
Mr. Gergick stated that some guidance from Council is needed.
He will put together a draft and timeline by next month.
5. Discussion and recommendation from the Recreation Advisory
Commission regarding open space at the Town’s Faison Road
property
Ms. Hyatt and Mr. Gergick discussed the recommendation from
the Recreation Advisory Commission regarding open space at the
Faison Road property. Mr. Rambo agreed that the open space should
be available for public use.
Mr. Santos asked about the size of the open space and stated
that he would like to see some type of facility there as well as a
Senior Center. Ms. Farrell clarified the overall conceptual ideas for
space. Discussion followed.
6. Program/projects update
Mr. Gergick provided updates on several projects, including
Waterfront Park, Carolina Park, and Rifle Range Road.
Mr. Gergick provided a summary of successful summer camps
and noted recent and upcoming events.
Mr. Gergick provided an update on the Park West Pool
renovation.
Ms. Hyatt asked about the design for the new basketball and
pickleball courts at Waterfront Park and Carolina Park. Discussion
followed.
Mr. Santos stated that he had discussed starting a youth hockey
program with Coach Concannon of the Carolina Stingrays. He
suggested using these courts for hockey. Mr. Gergick stated that the
design of the courts would allow for that.

County ROD Office in Plat Book ED, Page 898. Planning
Commission recommended approval
