TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION JANUARY 9, 2020 MINUTES Present: Richard Gutowski, Chair, Patrick Morrissey, Courtney Theis, Antonio White, Theresa Gordon, Bryan Blalock Absent: Deborah Sutherland Staff: Kate Dolan, Lynnette Lynes, Jane Yager-Baumrind Mr. Gutowski called the meeting to order at 8:00 am. I. Approval of Agenda Mr. Morrissey moved to approve the agenda. Ms. Gordon seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes The Commission deferred approval of the minutes to the next meeting. III. New Member Introduction Mr. Blalock introduced himself to the Commission. IV. Public Comment There being no public comment, Mr. Gutowski continued with the agenda. V. Discuss Increasing Annual Budget Mr. Morrissey reviewed with the Commission his proposal to the Mayor and Town Council asking for an increase to the Historical Commission’s budget. VI. Staff Update Ms. Dolan reviewed the staff update with the Commission. Historical Commission January 9, 2020 Page 2 of 3 VII. Committee Action Items A. Public Education Committee 1. Update on Black History Month Events Mr. Walter Brown reviewed the final schedule for Black History Month with the Commission. Ms. Gordon moved to increase the February 29, 2020 budget to include thank you gifts, plaque, increase of Diva concert not to exceed $5,000. Mr. Morrissey seconded the motion. All in favor. Mr. Brown discussed the 75th Anniversary of the H&R Sweetshop Mr. Morrissey moved to add this to the February 13, 2020 meeting agenda. Ms. Theis seconded the motion. All in favor. 2. Discussion of Archiving and Publishing Presentation Videos Ms. Dolan asked the Commission about videoing the next historic presentation. Mr. Morrissey asked if there was anyone who could video historic presentations employed by the town. Ms. Lynes answered that we do not have staff to videotape, but she would investigate getting an estimate for future events. B. Historical Marker Committee 1. Approval of NFC Label Tutorial Video Ms. Gordon reviewed the NFC Label stickers and tutorial video. Mr. Morrissey moved to have the Historical Marker Committee work with town staff to create a tutorial video. Ms. Theis seconded the motion. All in favor. C. Special Collection Committee 1. Discuss Archival and Organization of Items in History Room Mr. Morrissey reviewed the Marshall Jenkins project with the Commission. Mr. Morrissey also stated he will be reaching out to the Historical Commission January 9, 2020 Page 3 of 3 volunteers and will have them coordinate through Ms. Dolan to help archive the history room. VIII. Review of Revised 2020 Bylaws This item was deferred to next month. IX. Election of Chair and Vice-Chair The Commission voted Mr. Gutowski as chair and Mr. Morrissey as vice-chair through secret ballot. Mr. Morrisey reminded the Commission of the Historical Marker presentation on January 29, 2020 at Home Depot. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:05am.
