TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION NOVEMBER 12, 2020 MINUTES Present: Richard Gutowski, Chair, Patrick Morrissey, Deborah Sutherland, Brian Blalock, Courtney Theis, Theresa Gordon. Absent: Antonio White. Mr. Gutowski called the meeting to order at 8:06 am. I. Approval of Agenda Ms. Gordon moved for approval. Ms. Theis seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes Ms. Gordon moved for approval. Ms. Theis seconded the motion. All in favor. III. Public Comment There being no public comment, Mr. Gutowski continued with the agenda. IV. Staff Update Ms. Miller updated the Commission. V. Committee Action Items A. Public Education Committee 1. Discuss Black History Month Events Mr. Gutowski stated that Mr. White and Mr. Duke Brown have been coordinating to schedule events. Ms. Gordon stated that she is working with East Cooper Land Trust on an outdoor event at the Civic Center for Feb 13th, since this was a free date. Ms. Miller stated that only three events have been approved for Black History Month. Historical Commission November 12, 2020 Page 2 of 3 Mr. Morrissey expressed concern with support of non-historical events such as Juneteenth. The Commission discussed whether they should participate. The Commission agreed that more historical dates should be considered for sponsored events and that they should not participate in Juneteenth. B. Special Collection Committee (No Report) C. Tourism Committee 1. Approve History on Tap! Video Ms. Gordon updated the Commission on the video. Ms. Miller played the video for the Commission. The Commission agreed that Ms. Theis should work on editing the video and bring back to the Commission for approval. The Commission agreed to discuss the implementation of the passport program and passport brochure at the next meeting. D. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Vote for Cresco Award Winner Ms. Theis reviewed the nominations with the Commission. Ms. Gordon moved for approval of Captain Magwood to posthumously receive the 2020 Cresco Award. Ms. Sutherland seconded the motion. Motion passed on a 4 to 2 vote with Mr. Blalock, Ms. Sutherland, Mr. Gutowski, and Ms. Gordon in favor; Ms. Theis and Mr. Morrissey opposed. VI. Discussion of Next Month’s Agenda Items The Commission agreed that the following items should be included on next month’s agenda: ➢ Passport video ➢ Passport brochure Historical Commission November 12, 2020 Page 3 of 3 ➢ Black history month ➢ Implementation and outreach of passport program ➢ Disposition of Post & Courier archived articles There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:03 pm.
