TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION JULY 15, 2021 MINUTES Present: Deborah Sutherland, Chair, Pam Gabriel, Bryan Blalock, Courtney Theis, Danielle Cox. Absent: Clyde Hopper, William Hine. Staff: Kate Miller, Lynnette Lynes Ms. Sutherland called the meeting to order at 8:03 am. I. Approval of Agenda Ms. Theis moved for approval of the agenda. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes – June 10, 2021 Meeting Minutes Ms. Cox moved for approval of the minutes. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. III. Public Comment Mr. George Freeman, 1450 Bowman Rd, spoke regarding the historical marker for the Six Mile Community. He expressed concern that on the location of the marker and that the community has not been consulted. He suggested that the proposed location would increase traffic in the area. He distributed a map showing a proposed location that would be appropriate for the marker closer to the parking area. He also suggested that the new proposed trail could be aligned to pass by the same location. There being no further comments, Ms. Sutherland closed public comment. IV. Staff Update Ms. Miller reviewed the staff update with the Commission. V. Committee Action Items A. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Discussion and Action on Committee Tasks 2. Action and Update Budget Ms. Theis updated the Commission on items that will need to be discussed and approved at the next meeting such as the budget, upcoming projects, etc. She stated that the different Committees should submit their projects for consideration and approval as well as a proposed budget for those projects. Historical Commission July 15, 2021 Page 2 of 2 B. Historical Markers and Interpretation Committee 1. Update on Scanlonville Monument and Park No update. 2. Discuss Future 6 Mile Historical Marker Ms. Gabriel stated that the State I’On marker is missing and suggested that it should be replaced. She asked about the verbiage for the Six Mile marker and that it should be reviewed by the Commission. Ms. Miller stated that the marker text has not been determined and the Commission would approve the text at a later date. C. Special Collection and Research Committee 1. Discuss and Create Oral History Project Completion Plan Ms. Sutherland reviewed the oral history projects with the Commission. The Commission discussed possible candidates for oral histories. D. Tourism and Community Outreach Committee 1. Discuss Expansion of Old Village Tour (militarized history tour) 2. Discuss French/Spanish Invasion Project 3. Discuss involvement in CAP project of updating Sweetgrass Basket Stands Mr. Blalock updated the Commission on the projects. He stated that his Committee would like to be responsible for participation in events like the Blessing of the Fleet and the Christmas Parade. E. Marketing Committee F. Black History Month Committee There was no report for these items. VI. Discussion of Next Month’s Agenda Items The Commission agreed that the following items should be included on next month’s agenda: ➢ Discussion on location of the portion of the Grace Bridge and signage ➢ Approval of funds for History Room materials ➢ Approval of Budget ➢ Continued discussion on Committee tasks ➢ Scanlonville and Six Mile markers ➢ Discussion of possible museum There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:47 am.
